Episode 88
"One Step Forward...
Two Steps Back"
Scene: Covington Bay Police Department; the police cafeteria. Melody Sorensen alone is sitting at a table. Det. Jake Collier walks up, holding two steaming cups of coffee.
Jake: Here you go.
Melody: (as Jake hands her a cup) Thank you.
Jake: (sitting down at the table) Wait until you taste it before you say that. Police department coffee has a reputation for being one notch above acid rain.
Melody: It can't be any worse than hospital coffee.
Jake: (smiling) Oh, yes it can. We like to give it to convicted felons and force them to confess or we'll make them drink more. (He chuckled heartily) Of course, it has been deemed cruel and unusual punishment in some circles.
Melody: I think you're exaggerating. (She sipped her coffee and frowned at the bitter, burned taste)
Jake: Well, what do you think?
Melody: (managing a smile) I'd say cruel and unusual just about covers it. But it's better than nothing and I could use a pick-me-up. It hasn’t exactly been a good day. Seems there’s a problem everywhere I turn.
Jake: And I suspect Patricia would be one of those problems?
Melody: Good deduction. (smiling) Is that why you're such a good detective?
Jake: Hey, that was an easy case to wrap up. Naturally Patricia would be on your mind. After all, she crash landed into your lives just a few days ago by announcing she's been married to A.J. for the past six years. And from what I've seen, she has no intention of disappearing back into the wilds of Africa. That's got to be tough.
Melody: That is an understatement. I'm trying to hold on to what A.J. and I have, I want to make things work. but to be honest, I really wonder if we can.
Scene: Outside the Covington Bay Police Department. A.J. Lassiter and Sabrina Collier are standing on the front steps as the afternoon sun filled the clear sky with brightness and warmth.
A.J.: Why in the world would Nigel Greyhawk drop the charges against Eric? It makes no sense. The Greyhawks had him dead to rights, why let him off the hook and pass up a golden opportunity to stick it to our family. Hell, Eric actually deserved whatever punishment he would've gotten.
Sabrina: You sound disappointed that your brother's life isn't in ruins.
A.J.: Of course not. It just makes no sense.
Sabrina: Maybe this is part of a bigger plan the Greyhawks have.
A.J.: No…I don't believe that…not of Nigel. He's not the manipulative type…and he's never been for this battle between our families. I can't imagine him doing anything underhanded.
Sabrina: He's obviously keeping something quiet. He wouldn't tell you why he decided to drop the charges.
A.J.: Which is unlike Nigel…he's usually pretty straightforward.
Sabrina: Maybe you can talk to Eric and find out.
A.J.: Eric would sooner cut his tongue out before telling me anything. But I'm sure we'll find out the gory details soon enough. I'm sure we have not heard the last of this. (Pause) So, you said you needed to talk to me about something?
Sabrina: Yes…when was the last time you talked to your mother?
A.J.: Yesterday, why?
Sabrina: Maybe you should drop by and see her.
A.J.: (puzzled) Why? You want me to break the bad news about Eric in person?
Sabrina: No. Gloria has got some bad news of her own for you.
A.J.: (concern growing in his face) Which is?
Sabrina: Her divorce from Glenn…things didn't go as well as we hoped…not even close.
Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; Walter Stone's office. Captain Walter Stone and Kevin Lassiter are there.
Walter: I don't need you to tell me about my relationship with my daughter!
Kevin: What relationship? It's obvious you have no idea what’s going on in her life. She's apparently been involved with Eric for months and you had no clue. Apparently, the only time you have to talk to her is when you forbade her to attend Alec's memorial service.
Walter: You must be pleased that she didn't listen to me.
Kevin: Thank God she didn't. It was a wonderful service and she was there to show how much she cared for and loved Alec. Unfortunately Richie didn't get the chance since you managed to coerce him into not coming when I know how badly he wanted to be there.
Walter: It was inappropriate to say the least for him to be there?
Kevin: Inappropriate to what? Mourn his dead uncle? Or is it mourning his dead uncle who died of AIDS that's the problem?
Walter: Kevin, do we really need to rehash this? Can't you let it go?
Kevin: You still can't deal with how Alec died, can you?
Walter: I just wish you would let him rest in peace. He's been gone for five years for God's sake and you cling to his corpse like a life preserver. You just won't let him go and move on...let the rest of us move on.
Kevin: Remembering him and how much we loved him is not digging up his grave. He was a wonderful man and a lot of people loved and cared about him and there is nothing wrong with expressing that no matter how long ago he died.
Walter: You're right. There is nothing wrong with remembering him. But you have twisted and distorted his memory so much that no one knows him for who he really was.
Kevin: No one knew Alec better than me.
Walter: Really? My brother was an excellent director... well on his way to being one of the greats...someone whose work would've been compared with John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Cecil DeMille or Steven Spielberg. But thanks to you and your instance on throwing your relationship in everyone's faces...not to mention building that clinic with Alec's name attached...the only thing he is known for is being a gay man who died from AIDS. You took away any legacy he might ever have.
Kevin: That is not true!
Walter: Really? Seems to me they can't write about his films or have a retrospective of his work without mentioning his sexuality and how he died. Could that be because you've spent so much time make sure everyone who'd listen knew about it?
Kevin: Alec will always be remembered for the talented, creative director that he was. But there is no denying that he was gay and that he died from AIDS. I know you want to hide that and treat it like some dirty secret, but he did nothing to be ashamed of and I won't pretend that he did.
Walter: Fine, Kevin. You win. You're the grieving widower...I know it's a title you enjoy and I certainly wouldn't want you to relinquish it. Just leave me and my family out of it. Stay away from me...and my kids.
Kevin: Believe me, staying away from you is quite easy...but Richie and Melissa are another story.
Walter: Richie and Melissa are for me to deal with!
Kevin: Seems to be they need someone to be there for them. Richie is ripped apart by Candice Dailey's murder and his best friend being put on trial for it...and Melissa is involved with a man who is going to ruin her life. Just exactly how are you planning on dealing with them?
Walter: (testily) You are really close to crossing the line, Kevin!
Kevin: Of course I am. You've always had a real problem with the truth.
Walter: What I have a problem with is you thinking that because you played house with my brother it makes you part of the family. My kids may be misguided enough to see you as 'Uncle Kevin', but you're nothing to me except the man who ruined my brother's life and reputation.
Kevin: You really blame me because you couldn't handle Alec being gay. When he came out you threw him away and when he was diagnosed with AIDS, you treated him as if he were dead long before the disease claimed him.
Walter: You would see it that way.
Kevin: Because that's the way it was! You cut him out of your life…you pretended that he didn't exist…and you tried to get Richie and Melissa to do the same. Thank God they didn't…thank God they maintained a relationship with Alec. It was good for both of them.
Walter: You think it's wonderful they got see their once strong and dynamic uncle die of a debilitating disease? They got to enjoy seeing him hooked up to tubes and machines…blind…his body riddle with sores…barely able to draw a breath? Gee, what was I thinking? How could I have missed out on that?
Kevin: Alec's life was not about pain and misery and suffering. If you knew him, you'd know that. Even with the disease…even at it's worst…he enjoyed and embraced life. He lived it to it's fullest. You missed out on a lot of good times. And that's a real tragedy.
Walter: I think I've had just about enough of this, Kevin. Alec is dead and with that that severs all ties we may have had. I'd really like it to stay that way.
Kevin: Of course you would. You don't want anything to remind you of your faggot brother who died of the faggot disease, right?
Walter: (icily) Kevin…I'm asking you to leave. Please don't make me ask you again.
Kevin: Fine…I'm going. There's really nothing for me here anyway. (Kevin headed for the door, then paused and turned back to Walter) You know, Alec loved you to the very end…he waited for you to come around…to be there for him. He still wanted his brother…but you rejected him…and you're still rejecting him even after his death. I'll always hate you for causing him that pain.
Walter: Good…then you know the feeling is mutual…because I feel the same about you.
(Kevin glared at Walter and then pulled the door open. He was stunned to see Nigel and Eric standing there, about to knock)
Kevin: Nigel… (He looked at Eric, puzzled) Eric? Nigel?
Nigel: (following Eric) Captain, Eric and I would like to talk to you for a few moments.
Walter: Why?
Kevin: What is going on here? Shouldn't you be locked up with the rest of the felons, Eric?
Eric: (turning to Kevin) Kevin, I know the idea of being locked up with a bunch of hot, sweaty men might thrill you…but it's not something I get off on.
Nigel: (interrupting) Let's not get off the subject. We are here for one reason and one reason only.
Kevin: And what would that be? What could you possibly have to say to Eric that didn't include being sworn in by a bailiff and testifying before a jury?
Eric: Kevin, I'll bet you came down here to cheer the guard on as the closes the cell door behind me, but I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed.
Kevin: And why is that?
Walter: Kevin, I'm going to have to ask you to leave. This is official police business, which makes it none of yours.
Eric: Oh, Captain, let him stay. I don't mind sharing good news with family.
Walter: Fine. What is this all about?
Nigel: Captain Stone, I just wanted to bring this situation to an end before things went any further.
Walter: Meaning?
Nigel: It means that I've decided to drop the charges against Eric.
Walter: What!?
Kevin: You can't be serious! Nigel, you can’t do that!
Scene: Covington Bay Police Department; the police cafeteria. Melody and Jake are sitting at a table having coffee.
Jake: Melody, I realize that you are going through a tough time right now…but surely you and A.J. can work through this. You've had a great relationship for all this time and I know he loves you.
Melody: And I love him. It's not love that's the problem. No matter how much I want to I don't know if I can ever trust A.J. again. He lied to me about his marriage to Patricia. He may not have cared about the marriage or thought it was important…but the bottom line is that he lied to me. It's really hard for me to get past that.
Jake: It's still fresh in your mind. Didn't Patricia just show up in this town a couple of days ago? And look at everything that has gone on since. Have you really even had the chance to deal with this without some new disaster?
Melody: Things sure haven't been quiet…that's for certain.
Jake: Well, maybe that's what you and A.J. need…time to spend together…quiet time to hash out your issues and work things out.
Melody: We could use that. But A.J.'s so involved with working on the Nathan James case and now this war between the Lassiters and the Greyhawks. Taking time to soothe my bruised feelings isn't high on his list of priorities right now.
Jake: I find that hard to believe. I can't imagine that A.J. doesn’t know how important you are in his life.
Melody: Like I said, Jake, I know A.J. loves me. I know I'm important to him but is our relationship and being together number one with him? I don't think so.
Jake: You can't really believe that.
Melody: Jake, if there is one thing that Patricia Tamakai's return to Covington Bay has done is make me look long and hard at my relationship with A.J.. I'm starting to realize there are things that I've overlooked and not paid attention to for a very long time.
Jake: Such as?
Melody: Jake, I really don't think I should be talking to you about this.
Jake: Why not? You obviously need a ear to bend. I don't mind listening.
Melody: I know…but you and A.J. are friends…close friends. I don't want to make you uncomfortable by saying anything that might reflect badly on him.
Jake: Trust me, you're not. I know A.J. pretty well. You can't tell me anything about him that I probably don't already know.
Melody: (Pause) Jake, the only thing I have wanted from A.J. is to get married and have a family. But A.J. has always been reluctant to get married…or make that kind of commitment. I always thought he felt it would cramp his style…that he couldn't be the adventuring reporter if he had a wife and child to take care of.
Jake: Well, that would change things don't you think? A man couldn't take the kind of risks that A.J. does on a regular basis if he has such responsibilities. Maybe A.J. is afraid of those changes.
Melody: Maybe, but when Patricia showed up, I thought he didn't want to get married to the fact he already had a wife. I even thought he didn't want to marry me because it was her he really wanted.
Jake: You really don't think A.J. is in love with Patricia?
Melody: No…of course not. A.J. has many wonderful qualities, but self sacrifice isn't one of them. If he really loved Patricia and wanted her, he'd be with her. And he wouldn't have waited six years for her either. I think A.J.'s marriage to Patricia is just what he said it was…a mistake made while he was drunk. And he wants to get a divorce as soon as he can and get back to life the way it was…exactly the way it was.
Jake: And you don't?
Melody: Jake, life the way it was means that A.J. and I continue our relationship with no goal in mind…no future planned. He doesn't want settle down…he doesn't want to make a commitment. He's made that clear that as much as he wants to work things out, he doesn't want to take our relationship to the next step. Combine that with the fact that I don't know if I can ever really trust him again and I don't know if we have a chance. Patricia's return has made me look at our relationship and wonder if A.J. will ever be able to give me what I need…what I want.
Jake: And when you say this to A.J., how does he respond?
Melody: That he wants to see what happens…he can't make any promises…but he wants to work things through. He says he same things he always said. And in the past I accepted it and hoped it would work out…I believed it would work out some day. I'm not sure I believe that anymore.
Jake: Melody, you have every reason to have doubts about your relationship with A.J.. Who wouldn't at a time like this? But I don't think you can walk away from it without giving it everything you've got.
Melody: Of course I can't. I love A.J.. I can't even think of what my life would be like without him. I guess that what makes this so difficult…and so painful. (After a meaningful pause, she managed a slight smile) Why can't guys be more like you?
Jake: What does that mean?
Melody: Jake, you know exactly what you want, to meet the right woman, fall in love, and make a life together.
Jake: Some might say that is boring.
Melody: I wouldn't. Believe me, I'd kill to have that kind of boring in my life...and I'll be so will a lot of other women. That is why I am going to get to finding you someone right away.
Jake: Melody, that isn't necessary.
Melody: I think it is. You're too nice a guy to be alone one more minute than you have to be. I'm going to change that starting right now.
Jake: (as Melody reaches for her purse) Don't tell me you've got a beautiful woman hidden in there?
Melody: Sort of. (She pulls out her cellular phone) Tell me, do you have any plans tonight?
Jake: Other than making dinner and crashing in front of the television...no.
Melody: Great! Then you can come to the party at the Lassiter Mansion tonight?
Jake: The Lassiters are throwing a party?
Melody: Actually, Adam and Maggie Lassiter are. They're coming back to town tonight and there's a party in their honor.
Jake: I thought they were in Scotland for the year.
Melody: They cut their trip short for some reason...probably because of all the craziness in the family. Anyway, Harry Tamakai was at the hospital hand delivering invitations and he gave me one. I told him I'd find A.J. and make sure he knew about...that's another reason why I came. Anyway, why don't you let me invite a friend of mine from work...and you can meet at the party.
Jake: (shaking his head) Melody, I don't know...I'm not too big on fancy shindigs.
Melody: I pretty much guessed that, being the down to earth guy that you are. But, can you make an exception, just this once? (Pause) Come on, Jake. Why don't you let me call my friend and you can meet her tonight? What have you got to lose?
Jake: Nothing, but...
Melody: Then it's decided. I'll call Janie and set it up.
Jake: I have the feeling you're not going to take no for an answer.
Melody: (smiling) Glad you caught on.
Jake: (throwing his hands in the air) Okay, I'll do it. But, in exchange, you have to promise to save me a dance.
Melody: Sure...but once you meet Janie, I doubt if you'll want to dance with me.
Jake: (wistfully) Oh, I think I can spare a few moments for you.
Scene: Outside the Covington Bay Police Department. A.J. and Sabrina are standing on the front steps.
A.J.: (shaking his head) You've got to be kidding.
Sabrina: I wish I were.
A.J. How could Glenn do something so despicable?
Sabrina: For him I'm sure it was rather easy.
A.J.: He actually convinced a judge to delay the divorce until the end of Nathan's trial?
Sabrina: Knowing full well that that could take months. He is using his own daughter's murder to further his own cause. He even had the nerve to suggest that Candice would've wanted this because she was so eager for Gloria and Glenn to stay together.
A.J.: How could he do this to her…and to Candice's memory!?
Sabrina: Because he is a selfish monster…because he only cares about himself. He's a bastard…plain and simple.
A.J.: Look, I never really liked the guy, but Mom loved him and married him and I respected that. But this.....! She must be devastated. I know how badly she wanted this divorce.
Sabrina: I don't think I've seen her so upset. Look, I know you and your mom have been at odds since she found out about you being married to Patricia…but I also know how close you are. She could use your support right now.
A.J.: And she's got it. Mom has every right to be annoyed with me because of that stupid mistake I made six years ago, I just hope she can look past that so I can give her a hug and tell her this will work out. (Pause) This will work out, won't it?
Sabrina: It won't be easy. I'm going to try and get the judge's ruling overturned, but this guy is pretty well respected at the courthouse. Not too many people are going to want to overrule him.
A.J.: Something I'm sure Jason Bennett, Glenn's attorney, was well aware of.
Sabrina: He's not one this town's most successful attorney's for nothing. (Pause) A.J., I know you've got a busy day, but…
A.J.: But you want me to come down to the hospital with you?
Sabrina: Could you?
A.J.: Sure. What's another hour putting off work?
Sabrina: Well, what about Jake? Wasn't he supposed to tell you something?
A.J.: (pausing) Yeah, but he said it could wait. I'll just catch up with him later. I'm sure a couple of hours won't matter.
Scene: A car as it drives through the streets of Covington Bay. Max is at the wheel of the dark gray 4x4, his ear pressed to the cell phone.
Victor's Voice: Max, why are you calling me? Have you done the job yet?
Max: I'm on my way there. I should be arriving at Lassiter's place in about ten minutes.
Victor: You still haven't explained what this phone call is all about.
Max: It's about the chili your chef's whipping up for me.
Victor: You can't be serious! You should be concentrating on making sure no one has discovered the bug you planted in Lassiter's apartment last night, not concerned about new ways to burn a hole in your stomach.
Max: Don't worry, Mr. Markham, it's all under control. I'll check A.J.'s place and once we know the bug is still our little secret, we'll have nothing to worry about.
Victor: You may not, but I do. You forget there is a lot riding on this plan working.
Max: Well it's going okay so far...I think we'll be able to pull it off. Now about that chili...
Victor: Max, I really don't think...!
Max: Tell the chef to make sure he puts plenty of cayenne pepper in it. Last time it was too bland.
Victor: That is why you called me?
Max: Hey, a chili's no good if it's not spicy.
Victor: (angrily) Goodbye, Max!
Max: (as the phone went dead) But... (he hung up the phone) ...he didn't let me tell him what kind of pasta I wanted.
Scene: Covington Bay Police Department; Homicide Division. Jake and Melody walk in.
Melody: Well, Jake, it's all set. Janie will meet you at the party at 8:00 tonight.
Jake: Okay, but I'm still not sure about this. I've never been on a blind date before.
Melody: I know they can be risky, but trust me. She's a great girl. She's pretty...she's got a great sense of humor...she loves kids...and she's a great cook. And she's been looking for a nice guy. I think you and Janie will hit it off.
Jake: We'll find out, won't we? Just don't forget that dance you owe me.
Melody: Don't worry, I won't.
Jake: And I really appreciate you trying to help me out.
Melody: Well, I figure I owed you something after dumping all my problems on you. I don't know what got into me unloading like that.
Jake: You obviously needed someone to talk to.
Melody: I know, but...
Jake: Melody, I didn't mind. I just hope I helped.
Melody: It was just nice to have someone to listen who isn't so close to the situation. I mean, ever since this started, my sisters and Gloria and everyone else have been really supportive...but they all are very opinionated on the subject. I should take A.J. back, or I should drop him, or I should scheme to marry him, or I should skin him alive. Valid options all. But, you just listened and let me talk. Not many men would do that. I appreciate it.
Jake: It was my pleasure. I just hope things work out for you...that you get what you want.
Melody: What I want is to be able to trust A.J. again so that if we ever do get married I know I'll be doing the right thing. Problem is, I don't know if that's ever likely to happen. (Pause as Melody glanced at her watch) I wonder if A.J. is done talking to Eric.
Jake: (glancing at his watch) Mom and A.J. have been with him for a long time. I hope that means he is letting them help him. Lord knows he could use it. (At that moment, Angela walked in, crunching on an apple) Angela, hi.
Angela: Hi, Jake. (She looks at her sister in surprise, as Melody kissed her on the cheek) What are you doing here, Melody?
Melody: I came down to see A.J..
Angela: Really? Did you get to see him before he left?
Melody: He's gone?
Angela: Yeah. I was just coming back from the deli and I saw A.J. and Sabrina Collier talking on the front steps before he got into his car and drove off.
Melody: Darn it! I can't believe I missed him!
Jake: I'm sorry, Melody. I guess we were in the cafeteria talking too long.
Melody: Oh, Jake, it's not your fault. We just got caught up in conversation.
Jake: Did you talk to Mom and A.J.? Do you know if they were able to do anything for Eric?
Angela: No. I've had enough of talking to A.J. for one day...and why should I care if they were able to help Eric?
Jake: (annoyed) Angela, really!
Melody: (frowning her disapproval) Unfortunately, I don't have time to stick around and scold you, sis. I have to stop by A.J.'s place and pick up some clothes I need to drop at the dry cleaners and then I need to get back to work.
Angela: (sarcastically) Oh, darn.
Melody: That doesn't mean we won't talk later. (Melody kissed Angela on the cheek) Bye, Angie. (She turned to Jake) Thanks again, Jake. I'll see you tonight, I guess.
Jake: Tonight it is. Bye.
Melody: Bye. (Melody walked out)
Angela: (curiously) Tonight? What was that all about? You and my sis having a secret rendezvous?
Jake: Of course not! How could you even suggest such a thing?
Angela: Easy, killer, I was just kidding.
Jake: (testily) I don't think that's any thing to joke about.
Angela: Really? I think it is funny. Melody is so in love with A.J. she'd never even look at another guy....and you wouldn't risk your reputation as a good guy by messing around in their relationship anyway, would you?
Jake: (nervously) Right...on both counts.
Angela: Then see why it's so funny?
Jake: (annoyed) The humor still escapes me. (Pause) The fact that A.J. and Mom left really worries me. I wonder if they were able to do anything for Eric.
Angela: Jake, Eric is beyond anyone's help. He's too far gone.
Jake: He's in a tough spot, but there must be something that could be done that will make it easier for him.
Angela: Maybe. But the only way he can even possibly get his life back together is if the charges were dropped or dismissed...and that will never happen.
Scene: Covington Bay Police Department; Homicide Division. Walter's office. Walter, Eric, Nigel and Kevin are there.
Kevin: You can't drop the charges, Nigel.
Nigel: Kevin, I can...and that's exactly what I am going to do.
Kevin: But why? I don't understand.
Walter: I'm afraid I don't either.
Nigel: Eric and I have talked and we've come to realize that it's best to just drop this before it gets anymore out of hand.
Kevin: How could it get anymore out of hand!? He attacked you unprovoked and you're going to let him get away with it!? How did he do it? Did he say or do something to you.... did he threaten you?
Nigel: Kevin, this was my decision. Believe me, Eric was surprised as you are.
Walter: (shrugging) Well, Mr. Greyhawk, I don't know what brought this on, but it's your decision how to handle it.
Nigel: Thank you. Now, if there's anything else...I'd really like to leave.
Walter: You're free to go. I have no reason to hold you.
Nigel: Good. (Nigel headed for the door) Eric, I imagine you must have things to take care of here first, but I'll expect to see you within the hour.
Eric: Sure...whatever.
Nigel: Thank you, Captain Stone. (He looked at Kevin) Goodbye, Kevin. (Nigel walked out)
Kevin: You know I've always thought there was no justice in the world, now I'm sure of it. (Kevin rushed out)
Eric: (turning to Walter) Well, Captain, I guess this means the rumors of my demise are greatly exaggerated.
Walter: Come again?
Eric: You heard Greyhawk. We settled it...and the charges were dropped. Where's my badge and gun? Does Jake still have it?
Walter: You think you can just walk back in here after what you've done...as if nothing's happened?
Eric: But what have I done? Greyhawk dropped the charges. And as far as those nasty articles in the Times about me and Danny James, you said yourself it'll all die down in a few days.
Walter: I don't think it's going to be that easy. The press have been swarming this place...I'm getting phone calls from everyone from the mayor to the little old lady next door And they all want to know what I'm going to do about you.
Eric: Why stand by me of course. This whole thing is obviously one big misunderstanding started by some slanderous articles written by a family out to ruin mine. Given the history between the Lassiter and the Greyhawks everyone will understand that and it'll soon be forgotten.
Walter: You honestly think harassing Danny James and attacking Nigel Greyhawk can be so easily swept under the rug?
Eric: It will if this department stands by one of their most finest and most decorated officers...as it should.
Walter: But I don't want you anywhere near here, Eric. As far as I'm concerned you're no longer fit to be a member of this or any other police department.
Eric: Does this mean you're refusing to let me come back?
Walter: Do I need to make it any clearer?
Eric: No...because what's clear to me is that the real reason you're refusing to let me come back is because of Melissa.
Walter: Leave my daughter out of it!
Eric: Why? That is what this is all about!? You're angry at me because I'm dating your daughter and you're going to take my career away to punish me. Well don't try it, Captain, because I promise you will be sorry.
Walter: You threatening me!?
Eric: I'm telling you I will not let you destroy my career because you don't like who I share my bed with. It's not only unprofessional...it's illegal.
Walter: And you would know about that, wouldn't you?
Eric: Maybe...but I promise that if you even try to keep me out of this department, you'll know more about it than I ever could. You want to try and take me down, then you and this entire station is going down with me!
Scene: Covington Bay Police Department; Homicide Division. Angela and Jake are standing near Angela's desk. Angela is hanging up the phone.
Angela: Damn!
Jake: Something wrong?
Angela: That was Gloria Dailey. She's Sam Jefferson's doctor. She says his condition hasn't changed. The kid is still in a coma since his beating the other night.
Jake: I'm sorry. Still no suspects?
Angela: None. We don't have a clue as to who could've attacked the kid and murdered his brother.
Jake: And you don't think there's a possibility that Eric could be right? Maybe the attack was gang related.
Angela: Look, I'll consider any theory, even Eric's. But there's no evidence to suggest that. Everyone we questions swears those boys had nothing to do with any gangs. I even talked to some of our snitches and they say the same.
Jake: So you've got nothing at this point.
Angela: And it might stay that way until Sam Jefferson wakes up...if he ever does.
(At that moment, Nigel came rushing through the department; Kevin was several feet behind him)
Kevin: (yelling) Nigel! Nigel, wait!
Nigel: Kevin, please! Will you leave me alone!?
Kevin: Not until we talk about this!
(Nigel kept going, rushing out of the room. Kevin went after him)
Angela: (curiously) What was that all about?
Jake: I can't imagine. But I guess Nigel's business with this department is done... for now anyway.
Angela: I guess I should go talk to the Captain. Obviously I'm going to need a new partner now.
Jake: That seems to be going around. I heard from Terry Martin today. He's not coming back from his vacation in Florida. He decided to take early retirement.
Angela: Really? You guys were partners for a long time, weren't you?
Jake: (nodding) Five years. Terry was a great cop...taught me everything I know. But, he was getting burned out. He's been talking about quitting for years.
Angela: Well, it's good to get out before it's too late.
Jake: You're right. I'm going to miss him though.
Angela: Too bad I can't say the same for my partner. (Pause) Hey, maybe the Captain will pair us together.
Jake: Maybe. Think you can handle working with me?
Angela: (grinning) After working with Eric Lassiter, I could handle a stint in Hitler's army.
Scene: Outside the Covington Bay Police Department. Nigel is leaving the building. Kevin is following behind him.
Kevin: Nigel, Nigel! Nigel, wait!
Nigel: (stopping and turning) Kevin, I really don't want to talk about this. I have made my decision. Let's leave it alone!
Kevin: Leave it alone! How can I!? Eric viciously attacked you. From what A.J. says he might have killed you. How can you let him get away with that? How can you give him carte blanche to go around attacking other people if he wants to!?
Nigel: I don't think that's going to happen.
Kevin: Really? Eric's track record says otherwise.
Nigel: Kevin, I had to do this! I really had no choice.
Kevin: What do you mean you had no choice? Eric has no power over you so he couldn't have threatened or coerced you into dropping the charges.
Nigel: I already said that Eric didn't to anything to affect my decision.
Kevin: Then why!? Nigel, you're an attorney...I know much you love the law and how important justice is to you. How could you let Eric avoid paying for what he has done?
Nigel: Because of Vicki.
Kevin: Vicki? What does she have to do with this?
Nigel: She was there when Eric was arrested. It was horrible...I don't think I've ever seen her in such pain. It took Monica over an hour just to calm her down.
Kevin: And that's a shame. No child should have to be exposed to the sins of her parents.
Nigel: Exactly. And it's because of that I dropped the charges. I have to protect her.
Kevin: But if Eric is in jail where he can't hurt anybody, you are protecting her...and everyone else.
Nigel: Kevin, it's not that simple. Don't you realize what Vicki would have to endure if I didn't let this die down? There would be a trial and the whole thing would be the paper everyday. Vicki would have adults whispering and pointing at her and kids teasing her. She'd never be able to live down the fact that her father beat up her stepfather and went to jail for it. I can't put her through that. I can't let her suffer more than she already has. Don't you see that I'm just trying to protect her?
Kevin: (nodding) I guess so. I understand that. I just can't help but think she'd be better off knowing what kind of man Eric is and having him out of her life now before he can do anymore damage to her.
Nigel: No. No child needs to know such horrible things about their parent. Not if it can be avoided. And it can be avoided. I'm just doing what I think is best for her. Because when it comes right down to it, no matter how much I may not like it, Eric is Vicki's father.
Kevin: But he's never been much of one.
Nigel: Well, that's going to change.
Kevin: What do you mean?
Nigel: Kevin, Vicki shouldn't be caught in the middle of the Lassiter/Greyhawk war. Not only that, she also needs her father. She needs Eric.
Kevin: Nobody needs Eric, Nigel. You're her father. You're more of a father than he could ever be.
Nigel: Look, I love that little girl as if she were my own, but she's not. She has a father she loves very much. And she needs his love. She needs for Eric to be part of her life.
Kevin: But that will never happen. Eric has ignored Vicki since she was a baby.
Nigel: Like I said, that's going to change. Eric will be a father to his daughter. I've seen to that.
Kevin: How? Surely you didn't appeal to his sense of decency; it would be like searching the Sahara for a mountain spring.
Nigel: I made a deal with Eric. I agreed to drop the charges if he would be a fixture in Vicki's life.
Kevin: (stunned) You what? Nigel, how could you make such a deal? You know Eric's word is worth nothing.
Nigel: He will keep this bargain, I'm certain of that. His career as a police officer and his reputation is too important for him to risk losing it. I made it clear to him that if he reneges on this in any way, I will see him behind bars.
Kevin: And you think this is best for Vicki!? You think she should be exposed to a vile, bigoted, mean spirited man like Eric? You think that's what she needs in her life!?
Nigel: Look, I am more than aware of Eric's flaws, but he has sworn that he will be on his best behavior around Vicki. And Monica and I will be there to make certain he behaves himself.
Kevin: You've made a terrible mistake, Nigel. You don't know Eric like I do.
Nigel: Kevin, please...!
Kevin: (interrupting) You might think you've got him over a barrel, but he'll find a way to turn the tables on you and make you regret your decision. He's too sneaky and devious to put up with any attempt to rein him in.
Nigel: (shaking his head) I can handle this situation.
Kevin: Eric is like a cancer...he infects everyone around him with his poison. You, Monica, Vicki...he's going to hurt all of you, I'm sure of it.
Nigel: (irritated) I have made my decision.
Kevin: You are just asking for disaster.
Nigel: (angrily, his eyes flaring with rage) And you are butting in on something that is really none of your business. This concerns me and my family and you're really not part of that, so just keep your damn opinion to yourself, got that!? (There was a painful silence as Nigel's angry words sunk in)
Kevin: (taken aback; the pain deep and evident in his eyes) I got it. I'm sorry, Nigel. You won't be hearing from me on this again. I hope it works out for you. Goodbye.
Nigel: (as Kevin rushed away) Kevin! Kevin! (As Kevin continued rushing down the street, Nigel looked around and realized people were staring and he stopped, not wanting to bring attention to himself) I'm sorry, Kevin, I'm sorry. And just when we were making progress.
Scene: Covington Bay Police Department; Walter's office. Walter and Eric are there.
Eric: Captain, I cannot let you take my job away just because you're unhappy about me dating Melissa.
Walter: This is more than about you dating Melissa. What you have done over the last few days proves you're unfit to be a cop. I'm ashamed to have you in this department.
Eric: Quite frankly, Captain, I don't give a damn how you feel about me or my seeing Melissa. You can't get rid of me...I won't let you. And I'll fight you anyway I know how to keep my job!
Walter: And you would really put my daughter and this department through some expensive lawsuit just because you can't deal with your own flaws as a man and a cop?
Melissa: (standing in the doorway) That's enough, Daddy! You're not being fair!
Walter: Melissa, this is not time!
Melissa: This is the perfect time. (She went to Eric and hugged and kissed him) I went back to the Interrogation Room and they told me the charges were dropped. I knew everything would be all right. I knew this would turn out to be a big mistake.
Eric: And it was. But your Daddy here wants to use this to get rid of me.
Melissa: Like I said, Daddy, that isn't fair. Nigel Greyhawk dropped the charges and those charges of racism were made by people out to ruin Eric's family. Eric has done nothing wrong and you have no reason to fire him.
Walter: Melissa, you don't understand!
Melissa: I do understand that you're really upset because Eric and I are dating. Well, that's no reason to fire him. And he has every right to sue if you insist on going on with it.
Walter: I don't believe what I'm hearing! You're taking his side against me!?
Melissa: I'm only trying to do what's right. And giving Eric his job back is the right thing to do.
Walter: Oh believe me, it's not the right thing to do... (He grit his teeth) ...but it looks like I have no choice. This department is financially strapped already. It can't afford a lawsuit. (He opened his desk drawer and tossed Eric's badge and gun on his desk) There you go, Eric. You win.
Eric: (smirking as he scooped up his items) Thanks, Captain, I'm glad you see it my way.
Walter: (icily) Oh, you wouldn't believe how clearly I see things.
Melissa: Daddy, I know you're upset about this now, but it'll work out. You'll see that Eric and I are very happy and we belong together...just as you'll see giving Eric is job back was best for everyone.
Walter: I guess we'll find out won't we?
Eric: Well, I've got a few things to take care of so I'm going to leave for a few hours. But, I'll be back and get back to work, Captain. Lot to take care of around here.
Melissa: (frowning) I was hoping we could have lunch.
Eric: So was I...but let's do dinner instead. We can eat at my place.
Melissa: That sounds great.
Eric: Oh, it will be. (He kissed her on the cheek, his gaze fixed on an enraged Walter) Walk me out?
Melissa: Sure. (Pause as she turned to Walter) I'm sorry this happened, Daddy, but you'll see I'm right. You'll see.
Walter: Goodbye, Melissa. (Eric and Melissa walked out. Walter stood, his fists clenching and his face tight with anger)
(A few moments later, Angela and Jake appeared in the doorway)
Angela: Captain, what is going on? We just saw Eric and your daughter leaving the office. Shouldn't he be in a holding cell.
Walter: No such luck. Eric is not going to see the inside of a jail cell, at least not today.
Angela: Don't tell me that Eric has wiggled out of this!
Walter: (nodding) He has.
Angela: Damn it! How!?
Walter: Nigel Greyhawk decided to drop the charges. I don't know why, but he did.
Angela: So maybe for some explicable reason Nigel dropped the charges, but why did you give him his job back?
Walter: I had no choice. With the charges dropped, there's really no reason to keep Eric away.
Angela: Really? I can think of about a dozen without even trying.
Walter: Angela, I am more than aware of your feelings about Eric, but what's done is done. Now I'm sure you and Det. Collier have work to do.
Angela: This is so unfair! Eric commits harassment and assault and walks away smelling like a rose! Damn it! Am I ever going to be rid of him!? (Angela stormed out)
Jake: (rushing out after her) Angela!
Walter: (turning to his window, staring out on the city streets below. His expression hardens and his lips tighten in rage. Eric, you are going to be sorry for this, you son of a bitch! I will get you out of my daughters life...and mine.
Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; Glenn's office. Glenn walks in. He stops short at the sight of A.J. sitting at his desk.
Glenn: A.J.!
A.J.: (standing) Hello, Glenn.
Glenn: This is a surprise. What are you doing here?
A.J.: Surely you didn't think I wouldn't want to stop by and chat after hearing the news this morning.
Glenn: (nodding as he realized why A.J. was there) Oh. You've heard about the divorce being delayed. (Glenn shifted nervously)
A.J.: You bet I have.
Glenn: A.J., I really don't want to discuss this with you. It's between me and your mother.
A.J.: Well you are going to talk to me about it! Do you know how badly you've hurt her? Haven't you caused her enough pain? You know Glenn, I am not a man prone to violence at the drop of a hat...but you better give me one good reason why I shouldn't start with you!
Scene: A.J.'s apartment. The door opens and Max slips into the apartment. He closes the door behind him, dropping a lock pick kit into his pocket.
Max: This is going to be easy. Of course, I don't know if I can stand looking at this awful decor again. Sometimes Americans have horrific taste! (Max walked over to the coffee table and peered under it, looking at the listening device taped to it's underside) Looks fine. Certainly hasn't been touched. I don't think Lassiter has found this. I don't think the Boss has anything to worry about. (Pause as he Max stood) I better get out of here. I can't wait to get to that chili!
(At that moment, the doors lock started to jiggle and the knob started to turn. Max looked alarmed, rushing for the kitchen door. He disappeared behind the door as Melody walked into the apartment)
Melody: I've got to hurry or I'm going to be late for work! (She closed the door behind her and headed for the bedroom)
(In the kitchen, Max is backing away from the door. He is stopped by a small breakfast table that he jars. A glass is sitting on the edge of the table...and it slips off. Max watches in horror as it falls and crashes to the ground)
(In the living room, Melody is headed for the bedroom, but stops when she hears the breaking glass)
Melody: A.J.? A.J., what are you doing here? I didn't think you'd be home. (Melody headed for the kitchen door) A.J.? Is everything okay? Why aren't you answering me?
(In the kitchen, Max moves to a window, adjacent to the door. He pulls out his gun and levels at the kitchen door)
Max: (whispering) God, I hate killing women.
Melody's Voice: (outside the door) A.J.?
(The door started to swing open and a grim look swept across Max's face, his finger tightening on the trigger of his weapon...)
