EPISODE 90

“THE STUFF OF DREAMS”

Scene: Covington Bay Police Department; Homicide Division. Det. Angela Sorensen is sitting at her desk doing some paperwork.

Jake (walking up to Angela's desk): I think I'm going to stay out of the Captain's way for a few hours.

Angela: (gloating) I told you not to go into his office.

Jake: Well, I had to give him the reports on the Scannell trial. (Jake held up a file folder) I'm testifying in the morning. (Jake tossed the folder on the desk) He is really in a sour mood about this mess with Eric

Angela: Well, he's not the only one. I can't believe Eric does all the things he has and walks away clean as a whistle. (She frowned disdainfully) It's disgusting.

Jake: Look, I know you have issues with Eric, but he's a good cop and that's something we’re in short supply of around here.

Angela: So because he's good at his job we should overlook any of his little flaws…like committing breaking and entering and assault and battery.

Jake: Angela, I think what Eric did was wrong. No matter how nasty the articles the Times got, he should've never retaliated by attacking Nigel Greyhawk.  I even think maybe he should've suffered some form of punishment. But it didn’t work out that way. Nigel dropped the charges and most likely the racism accusation will go away in a few days.

Angela: And it'll be business as usual, right?

Jake: Sad to say, but it probably will. However, I'd like to think Eric would learn a lesson from this.

Angela: But you know he won't. If anything he'll probably be more arrogant. (She stood) It's not fair, Jake, it's just not fair.  That bastard Eric Lassiter has railroaded his way through life, ran over anybody who got in his way and got away with it.  And now I have to have a front seat and watch while he does it.  Did I really work this hard at my job and finally be a homicide detective just so I can deal with this!?

Jake:  Angela, I'm sorry. I know this has to be tough for you.

Angela: Do you really expect me to believe you have any sympathy for me?

Jake: Why wouldn't I?

Angela: You're in Eric's corner. You've made no secret about the fact that he is your closest friend.

Jake: You're right, he is. And I do have a certain amount of loyalty towards him. What is wrong with that?

Angela: Because your loyalty is misplaced. Eric doesn't deserve it. Look how quickly he turned on you at Greyhawk Manor.

Jake: Angela, I was arresting him at the time. It would make anybody angry.

Angela: (angrily) You will always excuse him no matter what he does will you? (She shook her head) But I guess I shouldn’t expect anything else.

Jake:  Why?  Because Eric's my friend?

Angela: No, because you're a man. You all stick together in the end. I thought you were different Jake. For a split second, I thought you were a decent guy. I guess I was wrong.

Scene: Covington Bay High School; the cafeteria. It a crowded, bustling room full of noisy students. Marc Tamakai and Richie Stone sat at a table. Marc devoured his meal of beef stew, corn, bread and a carton of milk. Richie was eating the same thing, however, he picked absentmindedly at his lunch.

Marc: So, did you hear about Ernie Rios?

Richie: (shaking his head) No, what about him?

Marc:   The word is that he ran away from home last night and his parents showed up here hoping to find him.

Richie: (sarcastically) Oh yeah, if I ran away from home, this is the first place I'd show up.

Marc: Well, they looked really worried. I mean, Ernie's a good kid. He's one of this school's best students…he's been accepted at Stanford…he's dating one of the prettiest girls in school. I wonder why he'd run away from home?

Richie: (shrugging) I don't know, but let's face it, Marc. You never know what's going on in someone else's mind. He might look happy, but be miserable inside.

Marc: (nodding knowingly) You're right. (Pause) You know, you really should try eating. The beef stew isn't bad. (He held up a brown chunk dripping with gravy) This might be actual beef.

Richie: (shaking his head) I'm not hungry. I can't eat. All I can think about his making up with Nikki. (Pause) And before you say it, I know I have to take care of it immediately.

Marc:   So why aren't you talking to her now instead of sitting here with me?

Richie:  Because she took off with Nina.

Marc:  Where did they go?

Richie: I don't know. Maybe Nikki's just avoiding me. She was so angry after our fight this morning.

Marc: Richie, she has reason. You accused her of being involved with Greyhawk because he defended the guy when you tried to bash his face in.

Richie: (nodding) I know, I know. It was a big mistake. I just let my temper get the best of me. I've got to stop letting that happen. I've got to stop letting Greyhawk get to me and let Nikki do what she got involved with this to do.

Marc: Right…which is getting evidence proving Greyhawk killed Candice. And that has to happen or Nathan will spend the rest of his life in jail…not to mention what it means for you and me.

Richie: You don't have to remind me. That's why I have to find the diary before Nikki does. If she finds it first, we're finished.

Marc: (shaking his head) I don't want to even think about it.

Richie: Well, I… (Richie paused as fear came over him) Oh, God. What if Nikki has already gone after the diary? What if she's getting it right now?

Marc: You don't think that's possible, do you?

Richie: Marc, you know Nikki, how she is when she gets determined. She doesn't give up until she gets what she wants…and she's determined to find the diary. For all we know, she could have the means of ruining our lives in her hands right now!

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; the Intensive Care Unit. Nina Tamakai and Nina Lassiter are walking down a corridor, stopping at the end of the hallway.

Nina: Too bad they wouldn't let us see Nathan.

Nikki: I know. But Intensive Care has their rules…family only. I could've lied, but I don't think they would've believed either of us were related to Nathan. (Pause as she grinned) But we didn't really come here to see him anyway, did we?

Nina: I can't believe I agreed to this, Nikki. I think it was a mistake. I'll never be able to pull this off.

Nikki: Nina, I'm not asking you to do anything illegal.

Nina: But you are asking me to lie.

Nikki: For a good cause. It's to save Nathan's life.

Nina: I know that…and I want to help Nathan as much as you do. But I'm not a good liar. It doesn't come as naturally to me as it does to you. (Pause) Oh, I'm sorry.

Nikki: (smiling) Oddly enough, I'm not offended.

Nina: I shouldn’t even be here. Daddy ordered me to stay away from you and not only am I with you, I leave school to help investigate a murder. I know he'd never approve.

Nikki: Nina, I realize this isn't easy for you, but just remember that you are doing it for the best reasons in the world. We need to find Candice's diary. It's got to have evidence in it that will lead us to someone else besides Nate.

Nina: Like James?

Nikki: (hesitating) He is on the suspect list, certainly.

Nina: But you don't believe he's the killer? You told me yourself.

Nikki: I said I find it hard to believe he'd kill someone. But you can be wrong about people. I was certainly wrong about Richie.

Nina:   I'm sure he regrets accusing you of being involved with James. He has to know you'd never let anything happen between the two of you…no matter how James might feel about you.

Nikki: (as images of her and James kissing flashed through her mind) Right. I'd never let anything happen between us.

Nina: And you and Richie will make up and everything will be back to normal…relatively anyway.

Nikki: Of course. But, I can't be concerned about that right now. Let's go over the plan one more time before we put things into motion.

Nina: Nikki, I don't think it's going to help. I don't think I can do it. I just have the feeling I'm going to get in trouble somehow…that Daddy is going to find out.

Nikki: Nina, you're being paranoid. How is your father going to find out anything?

(At that moment, down the corridor, the elevator doors slid open and Harry Tamakai stepped off of them. He was reading something, not looking up so he didn't see his daughter and Nina. However, they both saw him)

Nikki: Oh my God! What is he doing here!?

Nina: What does that matter!? When he sees me, I'm dead!

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; Dr. Christopher Sloan's office. Dr. Christina Sloan is on the telephone. The young African-American doctor looks very upset and troubled, pacing the floor of her father's spacious office.

Christina: Daddy, when are you coming back home?

Christopher's Voice:  I’m going to be here an extra couple of days. I've been asked to speak at some of the hospitals here about the work I've been doing in heart medicine.

Christina:  Oh.

Christopher:  Is there some sort of problem?

Christina:  I’m getting a lot of flak from the James family about you not being here to head up the case.

Christopher:    You know as well as I do that I don’t need to be there.  His condition hasn't changed and it won't for the foreseeable future.   I'm in constant touch with my support staff, not to mention having my very capable daughter on the case.

Christina:  You’re right, but it's not the same as having you here and the James family is giving me a real hard time about it.  I just had a very ugly scene with Danny James and…

Christopher: Christina, don't let those people get to you…especially people like Danny James and his ilk. He should be grateful that I agreed to take on his brother's case. Having any relation to such a sordid situation is undesirable to say the least.

Christina: Well, sordid and undesirable certainly describes Danny James. He accosted me outside his brother's room and wouldn't let me go in. He insists that we step aside and let Darian Jackson take over the case.

Christopher: (scornfully) That's ridiculous. Darian Jackson doesn't have the skill or experience to handle the boy's care.

Christina:  And yet he seems to think so. He's been in my face since he was relieved of the job. Just last night he was in this office ranting and raving about doing some tests on Nathan. He said we should…

Christopher: Listen dear, don't let those kind of people get to you. You're above it and you're above them. Danny James is a loudmouthed thug and Darian Jackson is a talentless doctor bordering on incompetency. Ignore them and do your job. If they continue to bother you, report them to Glenn Dailey.  He'll take care of it.

Christina: Sure, Daddy. But, I really think that you should…

Christopher: (interrupting; his tone edgy) Christina, I don't need you to tell me what I should do. I know what I'm doing. (Pause as Christina looked hurt) I have to go now. I'll call you tomorrow.

Christina: All right, Daddy. Bye. (With a sigh, Christina hung up the phone as there was a knock on the door) Come in.

Darian: (walking in; holding a manila folder in his hand) Hello, Dr. Sloan.

Christina: (angrily) What are you doing here?

Darian: We need to talk.

Christina: (glaring at Darian) Really? I'd think after this morning there would be very little for us to say to one another.

Darian: I'm not interested in going another round with you. In fact, I'd just as sooner have nothing to do with you, but this visit is business.

Christina: We don't have any business, Dr. Jackson and I’m in no mood for your rudeness.

Darian: Sorry, I forget to check my manners when it comes to saving someone's life.

Christina: Will you please leave, Dr, Jackson? This is starting to border on harassment.

Darian: Really? If I remember this correctly this morning, you came to me.

Christina: And I'm telling you the same thing now as I did then! You are no longer involved in the Nathan James case so stay out of it! I received a call from the assistant DA. He told me you were at the medical examiner's office asking questions about my patient! You want to explain what that was all about?

Darian: (started) Patrick called you? Why would he do that?

Christina: Because he thought I should be informed about anything having to do with my patient. It's called professional courtesy. Ever heard of it?

Darian: Look, I'm not here to spar with you. I am here because of Nathan and what I've found out about his heart attack.

Christina: (sarcastically) Oh? Did you realize he had one? Thanks for the tip.

Darian: You know, any other time I would be glad to knock that tiara off your head, but I don't have the time today. (He held up the folder) I'm here to save Nathan's life…and now that I know the truth about his heart attack, I can do it.

Christina: The truth? What truth? What exactly have you found out?

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; the fifth floor. Dana Cooper, Dr. Zachary Dailey, Natalie Lassiter, Dr. Gloria Dailey and Sabrina Collier are there.

Gloria: (standing at the nurses' desk, hanging up the phone, a troubled look on her face. She turns to face Zachary and Sabrina) Melody's not answering her cell phone. She's not at her apartment and there's no answer at A.J.'s place either.

Sabrina: Gloria, that doesn't mean we should start to panic.

Gloria: Sabrina, considering all that's gone on in the fact few days, don’t you think we should worry? There are killers out there who my son can identify…they could've grabbed Melody as revenge or to lure him into a trap.

Sabrina: That's true, but she could also be stuck in traffic or simply be running late. Remember what happened when we panicked when we thought A.J. had disappeared? It turned out he was just fine and we looked like hysterical women.

Gloria: I'd rather be hysterical and wrong than take a chance on something terrible happening to someone who is like a daughter to me. (Gloria turned to Dana and Natalie, who stood behind the nurses station) Dana, are you certain Melody didn't say where she was going?

Dana: (hesitating) I don't remember her saying anything except that she'd be back in a couple of hours.

Gloria: And you're sure about that? I mean it's strange that she wouldn't even let anyone know where she was going.

Dana: (defensively) Well, she seemed like she was in a hurry. She just didn't have time to give me her entire itinerary.

Gloria: That's not like Melody.

Dana: (annoyed) Like I said, she was in a hurry.

Natalie: (eyeing Dana suspiciously) Maybe you should try her family. Her sisters might have some idea where she went.

Gloria: That's a good idea. (She glanced at her watch) Unfortunately, I can't make those calls. I have to be getting to surgery. I should be scrubbing up right now.

Zachary: (touching Gloria's shoulder) Gloria, maybe you should have someone stand in for you. I mean, you seem so upset, I…

(Dana's brows arched in anger as she glared at Zachary and Gloria)

Gloria: Zachary, I'm upset about Melody, but I can't let that get in the way of my job. My patient is counting on me…and this is a tricky operation. I can't ask another doctor to fill in for me at the last minute.

Sabrina: Don't worry, Gloria. We'll do everything we can to find her. And once A.J. shows up, he'll help. He might even know where she is…they could even be together.

Gloria: (fearfully) I hope so…unless something happened to A.J. too.

Sabrina: Let's not even think that way.

Gloria: You're right. I can't do that. I better go.

(Gloria walked away)

God, I hope that nothing has happened to either of them…that's the last thing this family needs.

Zachary: You got that right. (Pause) Why don't we go in my office and make those calls?

Dana: Zachary, is there anything I can do? I'd love to help.

Zachary: Dana, I appreciate that, but Sabrina and I can handle this. Besides, you have work to do. I'll see you later.

(Zachary and Sabrina walked away)

Natalie: I hope nothing has happened to Melody.

Dana: (icily) Oh, I'm sure she's fine. She's too mean to die.

Natalie: Mean? I don't think I've ever heard anyone describe Melody that way.

Dana: You've never had her in your face.

Natalie: That's because when I come to work, I do my job. Employers tend to appreciate that. (Pause) So, Dana, did Melody tell you where she was going?

Dana: Of course not! I told you she didn't!

Natalie: I know what you said. I also know how distracted you've been today. Melody could've told you and you might of not been paying attention or had your mind on a new plan to snare Zachary.

Dana:  Are you trying to say that if something happened to her it's my fault?

Natalie: I'm saying that if you let your personal problems get in the way of the job again, and you either weren't paying attention or simply forgot what Melody said to you, there's going to be a lot more at stake than angering me or you getting chewed out by your bosses. This time, someone could really get hurt…or worse.

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; Glenn's office. Dr. Glenn Dailey and A.J. Lassiter are there.

A.J.: Just the mention of someone trying to find out who really killed Candice really seems to bother you, Glenn. You get upset…and nervous about it. Want to tell me why?

Voice: (from the doorway) Answer him, Dr. Dailey. I'd be real interested in your answer myself.

(Both Glenn and A.J. turned to see Lucas Greyhawk standing in the doorway)

Glenn:  Lucas?

A.J.: (annoyed) Greyhawk, what the hell are you doing here?  Glenn and I are having a private conversation.

Lucas: Well, you know how I hate to feel left out.  (Pause)  Dr. Dailey, I'd like to talk to you about Candice.

Glenn: Why? You hardly knew her. You met once…maybe twice when she and James were dating.

Lucas: Yes, and she was a lovely young woman. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Glenn: Thank you. Is that why you came…to offer your condolences?

Lucas: In part.  I’d actually like to ask you a few questions.

Glenn:  Why?

Lucas:  The case.  I’m working for Sabrina Collier.

Glenn:  You’re working for the defense?!  You can’t be serious!

A.J.:  Oh but he is.

Glenn:  How could you do this to your brother?  You know how much James loved my daughter. Nathan killed the girl that was going to marry your brother. How could you aid and abet a murderer!? James must feel so betrayed.

Lucas:  James isn't happy about that, but I can't be concerned about that…not when the truth about your daughter's death needs to come out. Now you can help me with that by answering a few questions.

Glenn: But I don't know anything about her death except that her killer has been caught! You're supposed to be two fairly intelligent men…how could you let yourself be sucked into something you're bound to lose!?

Lucas: Just let us worry about it, Dr. Dailey. Now are you going to cooperate and answer my questions?

Glenn: Is that a threatening tone in your voice I hear?

Lucas: Let's just say that I'm very determined to get to the truth and I will get the answers I need from you one way or another!

A.J.: Greyhawk, why don't you put away the rubber hoses? Threats aren't going to do any of us any good.

Glenn: I really have nothing to say to either of you. Now get out of here, both of you. (The telephone rang) I expect you to be gone by the time this telephone call is finished. (Glenn answered the telephone)

A.J.: Don't you think you're being a little hard on the guy?

Lucas: I find that surprising coming from you. You were about to rip the guy a new one when I walked in.

A.J.: Yes, but that personal. You're being very accusatory towards Glenn.

Lucas: So? He is a suspect.

A.J.: You can't be serious! Glenn may be many things, but he's no killer.

Lucas: And how can you be sure of that?

A.J.: I know the man…he's been part of my family for the past six years. He has his flaws, yes, and he's but, a killer? Someone who could rape and beat his own daughter? No way. I don't buy it.

Lucas: A.J., you might be just a cut rate reporter of a small town newspaper, but you're not stupid. You know that men do horrific things to their children every day of the week….people we would never consider or suspect.

A.J.: I agree. But not Glenn. You're wrong about this one, Greyhawk. You're wrong!

Lucas: God, you are so afraid, aren't you?

A.J.: Of what?

Lucas: That I'm going to solve this case before you do. You're afraid that once again I'm going to show you up. Well, you should be afraid, A.J., because believe me…it's going to happen.

Glenn: (hanging up the phone) I thought I asked the two of you to leave. Do I have to call security and have you thrown out?

Lucas:  I'll just come back. And I'll keep coming back until you answer my questions.

Glenn: I told you I had nothing that could help you.

Lucas: Then it will just mean I've wasted my time. Believe me, it's happened before so you can just humor me.

Glenn: You're very persistent…as is A.J..

Lucas: Well, A.J. and I do have a few things in common. Thank God they're only a few, though. (He grinned as A.J. scowled at him) Now, shall we begin?

Glenn: Go ahead. I've answered these questions before with the police. I promise you the answers haven't changed.

Lucas: We'll see. (Pause) I guess I'll start with the obvious question.

Glenn: Which is?

Lucas: Why did you want your daughter dead?

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; the Intensive Care Unit. Nina and Nikki are standing in the corridor looking in horror as Harry comes towards them, his head down.

Nina: Oh my God!  I'm going to be grounded for the rest of my life! Daddy's going to send me to a convent!

Nikki: Quick, hide!

Nina: Where!?

Nikki: (looking quickly around) In Nathan's room!

Nina: I can't do that! The nurse said…!

Nikki: No time to worry about rules, girlfriend! Just get in there! (Nikki shoved Nina towards the door. Nina hesitated, then stepped inside. The door slid close behind her just as Harry looked up)

Harry: Nikki?

Nikki: (turning to Harry) Oh, hello, Harry.

Harry:  Nikki, what are you doing here?

Nikki: I'm here to visit my friend, Nathan James. Surely you must've heard he was in the hospital.

Harry: Yes, I do read the newspapers. However, I was under the impression that you were not to see this young man…or be involved with him in any way.

Nikki: Well, I… (Pause as she hesitated) I was here in the hospital anyway…for my annual checkup…you know, girl stuff. And I thought I'd just see how Nathan was.  Look, Harry, you aren't going to tell my parents are you? I mean, I really don't need to get into any more trouble with them.

Harry: I will not be part of your disobeying your parents, Nikki.

Nikki: I'm not asking you to. Just don't volunteer the information.

Harry: Of course not. I'm not one to gossip. But, if they ask me, naturally it is my duty to tell them the complete truth.

Nikki: I wouldn’t expect any less.

Harry: I should hope not. (Pause) Well, if you'll excuse me, I must be leaving. I have delivered all my invitations and I have to be getting back to the house.

Nikki: Invitations? To what?

Harry: There is going to be a party at the Lassiter Estate tonight.

Nikki: What? I haven't heard anything about this.

Harry: It was all rather sudden. I just heard from your grandparents about it a few hours ago.

Nikki: My grandparents? I thought they were in Scotland.

Harry: They are returning this evening and throwing a party to celebrate, I imagine.

Nikki: Throwing a party in their own honor? That sounds like them. But why are they coming home early? They're not supposed to be back in Covington Bay for months. I hope nothing has happened.

Harry: I couldn't begin to understand their motivations. (Pause) I'm sure if you call your parents, they might have more details. As I said, I have to be going.

Nikki: Of course. Bye, Harry.

Harry: Bye. (Harry started to walk away, but then stopped paused) By the way, Nikki…have you seen my daughter, Nina?

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; the Intensive Care Unit. Nathan's room. Nina is standing near the door, looking terrified.

Nina: Oh, I should've never lied to my father!  (Pause) If I don't get caught, I'll never do anything bad again, I swear it! I swear! (Nina turned to see Nathan lying in the bed) Poor Nathan. He looks so weak…so helpless. (She slowly approached the bed) How terrible he should have to go through this. He doesn't look like he could hurt anyone.  I don’t know him very well.  But, he always seemed so kind. (Nina's mind slips back to a conversation that took place between she and Nathan several months ago…)

(Nina is walking down the hallway to the library in the Lassiter Estate. As she is about to enter, she spots Nathan on the telephone. He is smiling widely as he talks)

Nathan: I can't wait until we're together. I miss you so much. (Pause) Right. We'll meet at the usual place. I love you. I… (Just then Nathan spotted Nina. A look of fear slipped across his face) I'm sorry, I have to go. We'll talk later. Bye. (Nathan quickly hung up, looking very guilty) I'm sorry. I hope you don't mind me using the phone.

Nina: Why would I mind? I should be apologizing for interrupting your phone call.

Nathan: That's okay. I was almost finished anyway.

Nina: You're Nathan James, Richie's friend, right?

Nathan: Right.

Nina: I'm Nina Tamakai. I'm a friend of Nikki's.

Nathan: I've heard her talk about you. It's nice to meet you.

Nina: (as they shook hands) It's nice to meet you. I've heard a lot about you too.

Nathan: Probably all bad, I imagine.

Nina: No. Nikki and Richie always say nice things about you.

Nathan: Then, they're one of the few people that do. (Pause) I was supposed to meet them here, but I guess they're running late and I really need to be going.

Nina: To meet your girlfriend, right?

Nathan: What?

Nina: I couldn't help but over hear you on the phone.

Nathan: (startled) You heard me?

Nina:  Well, yeah.  I’m sorry.  But, I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop or anything.

Nathan: I'm sure you weren't. I just…

Nina: You're just a little embarrassed, right?

Nathan: Embarrassed?

Nina: Well, you said some very sweet things to her. Things I'm sure you wouldn't want anyone else to hear you say. I know how guys can be about being emotional with their girlfriends. It's hard.

Nathan: Is that the way it is with you? Does your boyfriend have trouble being emotional with you?

Nina: I don't have a boyfriend.

Nathan: Pretty girl like you? I find that hard to believe.

Nina: It's true. I don't have a boyfriend.

Nathan: Why not?

Nina: Lots of reasons, but I guess I just haven't met the right one yet.

Nathan: Well, I'm sure you will eventually. Both Richie and Nikki say what a nice girl you are. I'm sure there's someone out there for you. Love finds us all sooner or later.

Nina: That's very sweet of you to say. Your girlfriend is very lucky.

Nathan: No, I'm the lucky one…to have someone like her. (He glanced at his watch) And I really better be getting off to meet her.

Nina: Wait a minute. (She walked over to the grand piano where a large vase brimming with red roses sat. She pulled one out and gave it to Nathan) Give this to her. I'll bet she'll like it.

Nathan: Think so, huh?

Nina: I know I would it were me. And she's probably like anything that came from the boy she loved.

Nathan:  She would.  (Pause)   Thank you, Nina.

Nina: You're welcome. Bye.

Nathan: Bye. (Nathan walked out, passing by Harry in the doorway. Nathan nodded at Harry, who glared at the boy, then at Nina before stalking into the room)

Harry: Nina, what were you doing alone with that young man?

Nikki: I came here to get a book and he was here waiting for Richie and Nikki.

Harry: Nina, I thought I warned you about being alone with young men…especially young men with reputations like his. Surely you've heard about his criminal background?

Nina: Nikki told me something about it. But that was a long time ago and from what I hear, he's turned his life around.

Harry: Probably long enough to fool everyone before he goes back to his old ways. People don't change.  Nina, stay away from that boy. A young girl like you shouldn't be anywhere near his kind. I can't believe the Lassiters even let him on the estate…but they've never been discriminating about the company they keep.

Nina: Father, that isn't fair.

Harry: But it's true. Now promise me you will have nothing to do with that boy…promise me.

Nina: Of course, Father, I promise. (Harry nodded, then walked out)

(Nina's mind returned to the present. She looked at Nathan)

Nina: Just another promise I didn't keep to you, Father. (She reached out, touching Nathan's hand) Oh, Nathan…you're suffering because you fell in love with someone. No one should have suffer for that.  It's not fair. It's just not fair. (At that moment, Nina felt Nathan's hand move) Oh my God! (Her eyes widened in surprise as his hand gently began to squeeze hers)

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; Glenn's office. Glenn, Lucas and A.J. are there.

Lucas: Why did you want your daughter dead?

Glenn: (his eyes blazing with shock and rage)   Lucas, get out of here now!

Lucas:   Are you refusing to cooperate?

A.J.: (disdainfully) Greyhawk, you way are out of line.

Lucas: I'm simply trying to get to the truth.

Glenn:  I had no reason to want Candice dead! I loved her…she meant the world to me! How dare you accuse me of touching a hair on her head!

Lucas: So you're saying you didn't kill her?

Glenn: Of course not! As I said, I had no reason to! Candice was an angel…perfection. She was beautiful, smart, caring. She never did anything wrong in her life. And we were very close. I loved her.

Lucas: (nodding) So you say you were close…and you say you loved her. But, how well did you know her?

Glenn:  I knew everything about her. She confided everything in me.

Lucas: (smirking) You're kidding, right? Candice was a 16-year-old girl. No teenager tells her parents…especially her father…everything.

Glenn: You're wrong. She had no secrets…we shared everything. You don't have children, Lucas, so maybe you can't understand that. And we all know your family isn't exactly known for honesty. But there is nothing Candice kept from me.

A.J.: Glenn, you know that's not true. She never told you about her relationship with Nathan.

Glenn: Because there was no relationship other than what the James boy was able to twist the kindness Candice showed him into. When will you give that up and stop spreading that filth?

A.J.: And why is it so hard for you to fathom the possibility? We all knew how close they were…how much time they spent together. She was openly supportive of him…she helped him to pull his life together…get a job working here. She was working with him to improve his grades so he could go to college. We all commented on their closeness and speculated if there was something going on. You know that.

Glenn: But it was just speculation. Why would she when she was engaged to James Greyhawk?

Lucas: Which leads to my next question. Why was she engaged to my brother at such a young age?

Glenn: (nervously, twisting a pencil in his fingers) I admit they were young…but I got married young. It certainly isn't unusual.

Lucas: Really? I think it's very unusual for a father to encourage his daughter to marry so young. And you were very excited about the marriage, weren't you? In fact, you were pushing them together, right?

Glenn: What's wrong with wanting my daughter to have a good life? Your brother could’ve given her one.

Lucas: Not to mention what being part of the Greyhawk family could do for you.

Glenn: What are you insinuating?

Lucas: I don't think I insinuated anything; I think I've made it pretty clear.

A.J.: As much as I hate to admit it, Greyhawk has a point. I really don't think any teenage boy can give someone a good life. But let's face it, Glenn, you were obsessive about seeing James and Candice married.  You were the driving force in that relationship. You constantly harangued Candice about getting married. It was all you talked about…she couldn't get away from it. And I know Candice was reluctant…we all did. But that didn't matter to you. You ignored her anxiety. Instead you encouraged my mother and Zachary to talk to her about it to help her get over her fears. You were shoving those two kids down the aisle just so you could have another rich family as in-laws. I guess the Greyhawks were looking good since my mother was on the verge of dumping you.

Glenn: You would see it that way, wouldn't you? Anything to make me look bad, right?

A.J.:   I know Candice was reluctant to marry James. Sure, she agreed to the engagement, but I don't think she would've if it weren't for you. But her reluctance was obvious.

Glenn: (shaking his head) She was just nervous…who wouldn't be?

A.J.: Maybe she was just in love with someone else. And maybe she kept that to herself because she knew you would never like it or accept it.

Glenn: That's what Nathan James says…but we all know what a liar he is. And his only witness, Richie Stone, isn't exactly reliable either.

Lucas: But I can prove they are telling the truth without testimony from either of them.

Glenn: (as A.J. looked curious) And how can you do that?

Lucas: I've seen some of the things that were found near Candice's body the night she was killed.

Glenn: And?

Lucas: Among her belongings were birth control pills. (Lucas watched the blood drain from Glenn's face as he looked stunned. A.J. also looked surprised)  I did some checking and the pills were prescribed by a Dr. Williams from the Southtown Community Clinic.

Glenn: So?

Lucas: So? Dr. Dailey, Candice had a regular doctor right here in the hospital…a Dr. Steven Kendall. She'd been seeing him for years. In fact, right before her death, she went to see him about a mild ear infection and he gave her some antibiotics which were also found in her purse. So why would she go to a doctor all the way in Southtown for birth control bills? Dr. Kendall has an impeccable reputation…he certainly would never betray her confidence due to doctor/patient confidentiality.

A.J.:   Unless she didn't want anyone to find out she was taking them?

Lucas:  Good job, A.J.  If a young girl was having sex and didn't want her father to find out, naturally she'd do all she could to hide evidence of that and not seeing her regular doctor would be an extra precaution, especially since that doctor is a friend and a colleague of her father's.

Glenn: Okay, so she and James were having sex. They were teenagers in love. They were going to be married. I don't like the idea, but it happens.

Lucas: I thought you just said Candice tells you everything. Are you saying she was keeping this secret from you?

Glenn: (thrown) Well, I…

Lucas: And if she was keeping this secret from you, who's to say she wouldn't lie about her relationship with Nathan since she knew you would never approve?

Glenn: Look, you haven't proven anything. So Candice had birth control pills. Like I said, she was taking them because she was…intimate with James. At least she was being safe. (Pause) Look, are you finished? You've managed to insult and offend me by trying to make my daughter out to be some slut. Haven't you done enough?

Lucas: (shaking his head) Actually, Dr. Dailey, I'm just getting started.

Scene: Covington Bay Police Department; Homicide Division. Jake and Angela are near Angela's desk.

Jake: (annoyed) Angela, I don't appreciate the insults. It's not fair to lump the entire male species into one ball because of Eric.  Most men are not like him.  Some of us are even pretty decent.

Angela:  The only decent men I’ve ever known where my father and my uncle Gary.   But that's it. Every boyfriend I ever had, every guy who asked me out on a date, every male cop I've ever worked with has always been a male chauvinist pig who only saw me as a brainless skirt who couldn't wait to get me into bed. And when I didn't want to sleep with them, I was branded a lesbian. Of course, for a lot of them, that was even more of a turn-on.

Jake: And you put me in that category? You think I'm some slobbering Neanderthal who can't wait to corner you in a broom closet for a quickie?

Angela: No, Jake, you seem to have some sense of civility about you, but what am I supposed to make of the that fact that you are siding with Eric?

Jake: Eric is my oldest friend…we grew up together…in many ways he's like the brother I never had. And I care about him…I certainly don't deny that either. But I resent you saying that I'm siding with him because we have a little more testosterone than you or that I'm part of some cabal to keep women barefoot and pregnant. I've worked with women before. I don't consider them any more or less capable and talented than any man. As for Eric, if I thought going after him would help him or this department, I'd be the first to go for it. It wouldn’t be easy, but I'd do it.

Angela: I'm supposed to believe that?

Jake: Angela, you don't know me very well, but I can promise you that the two most important things in the world to me are my family and my job. Continuing this ugly situation will only make a tense situation on the job even worse and won't benefit any of us. It'll only anger and alienate Eric, which will only acerbate his problems…and this department will lose a good cop at a time when we can ill afford it. Sure, Eric hasn't been his best since Pete Cooper died, but he's still better than most of the cops in this building can only hope to be.

Angela: You're a very loyal man, Jake.

Jake: You say that as if it's a bad thing.

Angela: It is when your loyalty is misplaced. You seem to forget how quickly Eric turned on you.

Jake: He was being arrested at the time. That would tend to piss someone off.

Angela: When are you going to stop making excuses for his inexcusable behavior!?

Jake: I don't. But, I won't vilify him either. (Pause) Look, you and I are never going to agree on Eric…we're coming from two different places where he's concerned. Why don't we just agree to disagree and move on?

Angela: To what?

Jake: Working together…trying to have a professional relationship that isn't fraught with tension and stress…we're both going to have enough of that around here…especially now that Eric is back on the job and I don't have a partner. It would be nice if you and I could maintain some sort of courteousness…maybe even be friends.

Angela: Friends, huh?

Jake: Yeah, friends. It is possible for men and women to be friends. We can be good to have around if you need a tire changed or something heavy lifted.

Angela: I hope that's your idea of a joke.

Jake: (grinning) It's my idea of a bad joke. Angela, I'm serious about us though. We could both use a friend right now, don't you think?

Angela: Jake, I've heard this from men before and they sound as sincere as you do right now. But it didn't take long for their true colors to come out and I learned they were trying to steer me near the closest mattress or giving me the crap assignments and whispering behind my back that I couldn't cut it and only got the job because the department needed to fill the 'breast' quota.

Jake: Look, Angela, I know it's rough. I know it has to have been hard on you. It may be the new century, but in some ways the police department is still in the '50's. And let's face it, this town isn't exactly progressive either. But believe me, I don't want to sabotage you. Male or female, you're a good cop and that's what this department needs. That's all I give a damn about.

Angela: God, you are good at being sincere. You're actually making me believe you.   (sighing, smiling slightly) I guess I could try giving this friendship thing a chance. It would be nice to have someone in this office who didn't make life harder than it already is.

Jake: Well, I love to make life easy for people. Gives me a reason to get up in the morning.

Angela: The original nice guy, huh?

Jake: (nodding) I have been described as that, yes. For all the good it's done me.

Angela: Well, it must've done you some good. My sister Melody thinks you're great. Of course, considering her taste in men…

Jake: I thought you said you were going to give this a chance?

Angela: (smiling) Actually, that was a joke…I think. (At that moment, Angela's phone rang. She answered it) Det. Sorensen.

Darian's Voice: Det. Sorensen, this is Dr. Darian Jackson.  I was calling to speak to Eric Lassiter, but the desk sergeant said he isn't there and since you're his partner, I thought I'd speak to you.

Angela: Well, what can I do for you?

Darian: Can you come over to the hospital? Something's happened concerning Nathan and I thought the police should know.

Angela: What do you mean something has happened? Has Nathan's condition worsened? Is he…?

Darian: No, it's nothing like that. Look, I really can't get into this over the phone. I really think this is something to be discussed in person. Can you get Eric and come over?

Angela: Actually, I don't know where Eric is or when he'll be back.  But I’m on my way.

Darian:  Good.  Meet me in the Intensive Care Unit, right outside Nathan's room.

Angela: You got it. (She hung up)

Jake: What was that all about? Something going on with Nathan James?

Angela: It would seem so, but Dr. Jackson wouldn't elaborate. Sounds serious though. I’m going to meet him at the hospital and see what's up.

Jake: Well, maybe we should get in touch with Eric. The Nathan James case has been his from the start.

Angela: I'm not quite ready to deal with Eric. Why don't you come with me? You did participate in the case too, right?

Jake: True, but I wasn't the primary investigator. I really think that out of professional courtesy we should…

Angela: (sighing) Fine. Let's call him.

Jake: Wow, you're giving in rather easily.

Angela: You and I did declare some sort of cease fire, right?

Jake: Yes, we did. I'm glad you took it to heart.

Angela: So we'll call Eric, but we'll do it on the way there. That is if you still want to join me.

Jake: I don't have anything else going right now. Besides, I'm curious to find out what this is all about.

Angela: You're not the only one. (They headed for the door)

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; the AIDS Clinic. Zachary's office. Zachary and Sabrina are there. Zachary is hanging up the phone.

Zachary: Well, I've called A.J and Melody's apartments…no answer at either of them. A.J.'s cell phone was broken in the fire the other night and Melody isn't answering hers.

Sabrina: What about her family? Do they know anything?

Zachary: No. Her father, her uncle, her sisters…none of them have seen her. I just hoped I didn't worry any of them.

Sabrina: I don't think so. You just said you needed Melody back here for an medical emergency and her cell phones out of order. I don't think it would give them reason to worry.

Zachary: At least I hope not. I don't want to upset everyone over a false alarm.

Sabrina: What about her sister, Angela? You couldn't get a hold of her, right?

Zachary: No…she's not in the office. The switchboard said they'd try and get a message to her and have her call me. Sabrina, she has to be okay…so does A.J.. I don’t think Gloria could take it. She's dealt with so much in the past few days.

Sabrina: I know…not just with her sons, but in her own life.

Zachary: You're right. I still can't believe what happened at the courthouse. How could my father do such a thing!?

Sabrina: Because he can and he's selfish. That's really all the reason he needs.

Zachary: That's true. (Pause) Gloria was so upset when she came back from the courthouse…it was all I could do to calm her down.

Sabrina: I'm sure you made her feel better. She does seem to…appreciate your friendship these days.

Zachary: I'm glad. I mean, I want to be a good friend to her.

Sabrina: That's wonderful, Zachary. But there's probably something she could use from you even more.

Zachary: And what would that be?  (Before Sabrina could respond, there was a knock on the door) Come in. (Jack Rios walked in)

Jack: Grant, I… (He stopped, looking startled) Oh, I thought this was my brother Grant's office. This hospital is so damn big, I guess I got turned around. I'm sorry, Zachary.

Zachary: No problem.

Jack: Can you guide me to Grant's office?

Zachary: Sure, but I think he's in a meeting right now.

Jack: Oh. Well, I guess I'll wait here, if that's okay.

Zachary: Uhh…sure.

Jack: (walking in) It's been awhile hasn't it, Zachary…a month at least.

Zachary: (grinning) Yes, but I haven't forgotten how you robbed me blind in that poker game at Grant's place. (Pause) Sabrina, this is Jack Rios. Jack…Sabrina Collier.

Sabrina: (icily) We've met. Mr. Rios has written some less than complimentary things about me in his "Shoot From The Hip" column he writes for the Times.

Jack: Nothing personal, Ms. Collier.

Sabrina: Really? I tend to take being called an ambulance chaser very personally.

Jack: I don’t think those were the words I used.

Sabrina: Close enough. (Pause) Zachary, I think I'll check on Nathan. We'll talk later, okay?

Zachary: Sure.

Jack: Good bye, Ms. Collier. (Sabrina didn't respond, casting a nasty glare at Jack before walking out)

Zachary: Ouch. What did you write about her?

Jack: I just happen to think she's misguided in her attempt to get the James kid free, that's all. She's making this case about the kid being black and poor trapped in a racist system when it's about the fact he killed a sweet young girl. I said so in my column.

Zachary: Somehow I think you didn't word it so nicely. I know you can be abrasive at times.

Jack: Journalism is a rough and tumble business. Being Mr. Nice Guy doesn't always work.

Zachary: How would you know? You never tried it. (Pause) What are you doing here in the middle of the day, anyway? Shouldn't you being off writing your next tirade against liberalism?

Jack: I wish I were, but there's a little crisis in the family right now.

Zachary: What's wrong?

Jack: My brother Ernie ran away from home last night.

Zachary: What? Why?

Jack: No one seems to know.

Zachary: Did he have a fight with your parents or something?

Jack: Papa says he and Ernie has a scrape over Ernie's homework. Apparently he got a B+ on an exam he should've aced and Papa tore into him. Ernie was really upset and he took off. He hasn't been seen since last night.

Zachary: Jack, I'm sorry.

Jack: Oh, I'm sure everything will be all right. Ernie's just off licking his wounds. We've all done it when Papa gets too rough on us. It's got my parents worried though because Ernie usually doesn’t do anything like this.

Zachary: Sounds like a friend of mine who we can't seem to locate right now. But, I'm sure like, Ernie, she'll turn up fine too.

Jack: Well, I better see if Grant's available. Maybe he's heard from Ernie.

Zachary: Good luck.

Jack: Let's schedule a poker game soon, okay? I got some big credit card bills coming in and I need some extra cash to pay them off.

Zachary: Confident, aren’t you?

Jack: Against you? Always. (Grinning, Jack walked out)

Zachary: (wearing a large smile on his face, until he thought of the situation with Melody) I'm sure she'll turn up fine. She has too for all our sakes. A.J. would be devastated…and so would Gloria. And I can't stand seeing her in pain.

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; the fifth floor nurses station. Dana and Natalie are there.

Dana:   You're blaming me for what's going on with Melody!?

Natalie: I'm just saying that the reason why everything thinks it's strange that Melody would leave her without letting anyone know where she went is because it is. It's just not like her.

Dana: People's behavior isn't always consistent.

Natalie: Really? Yours is pretty predictable. I can almost bet that when Melody came by to let you know where she was headed and you were either wrapped up in thinking about Zachary or your ex-husband Danny or anything not having to do with work. You probably either weren't paying attention or you ignored her altogether.

Dana: You're not being very fair.

Natalie: And you are getting tiresome. When are you going to get clued into the fact that you are at work and you have to make that your first priority above all else? Does someone have to get hurt or worse for you to see that!?

Dana: I will not take the blame for this!

Natalie:  I could've guessed you'd say that. It's what you always do when you can't accept that you've done something wrong.

Dana: Excuse me, but aren't you supposed to be my friend?

Natalie: I am your friend, Dana, and that's why I can tell you these things.

Dana: I thought friends were supposed to be supportive.

Natalie: They are…and you know I'm always here for you. But I will not lie to you or be blind when I know you're doing something wrong. If that's the kind of friend you want, you're looking in the wrong place. (Just then, Sabrina was about to walk by the desk) Sabrina, any word on Melody yet?

Sabrina: Not yet. But I'm sure she'll turn up safe and sound. In the meantime, I'm going to check up on Nathan. Maybe he's made some progress.

Danny: (walking up) He hasn't.

Sabrina: (surprised) Danny! It's about time you turned up. Where have you been?

Danny: That doesn't matter.  I’d like to know why Darian Jackson isn't Nathan's doctor anymore.

Sabrina: That was a decision the hospital made. They think Christopher Sloan is a better doctor for Nate since the heart is his specialty.

Danny: So I've heard. But where is this miracle worker? From what I know he's out of town and he's got his bratty kid looking after my brother.

(The desk phone rang and Natalie answered it, turning her attention away from the conversation)

Sabrina: I know that.

Danny: And this doesn't bother you?

Sabrina: Of course it does. I don't think Darian should've been taken off the case.  I also think Dr. Sloan should pay more attention to his patient. But Nathan is receiving good care…and Darian stepped aside because he thought it was best for your brother.

Danny:  I want Darian back on the case.

Sabrina: That's something you should take up with Dr. Sloan and Darian. There's nothing I can do about it.

Danny: I thought you cared about Nathan? Can't you even try?

Sabrina: Look, Danny, I… (Just then her pager went off. Sabrina reached into her purse and pulled it out, looking at the number) I better get this. Excuse me, Danny. (Sabrina walked away)

Danny: Damn it!

Dana: You just make friends where ever you go, don't you?

Danny: You shut up! You got my $10,000 yet!?

Dana: You're kidding, right? You just told me about this a few hours ago!

Danny:   I just want to make sure you're working on it.

Dana: I told you I don’t know where I'm going to get that kind of money.

Danny: And I told you better think of a way…unless you want the entire world to know we are still married.

Dana:  Why are you in such a hurry for this money!?    Nathan doesn't seem to be getting better. It’s going to be awfully hard to break him out of jail if he's still on a stretcher.

Danny: Nathan's a fighter…he will get better…and when he does you better have that money ready. Do not mess with me, Dana.

Dana: Why are you doing this to me?

Danny: (smirking) Because I can.

(At that moment, Sabrina returned)

Sabrina: Danny, I’m going to visit your brother and then I have to head back to the office. You want to go up with me?

Danny: Sure.

(As they were about to walk away, Darian and Christina walked up)

Darian: There you are, Danny. I've been looking for you. Sabrina, I'm glad you're here too.

Sabrina: Darian, what's going on?

Darian: I need to talk to both of you. Can we go upstairs? Hopefully Eric and Angela have gotten here by now and we can talk about what I've learned.

Sabrina: About what?

Danny: This is about Nathan, isn't it?! Is he getting better!? (Dana looked alarmed)

Darian: Let's just go upstairs and talk about it, okay?

Danny: Darian, I want to know what's going on now!

Darian: It's better if we're all together before I get into this. Just be patient!

Danny: How can I be patient!? This is my brother's life we're talking about!

Darian: I know that.

Christina: This better be good, Dr. Jackson. I don't like being dragged all over the hospital like this!

Darian: I promise you…you all will be very interested in what I have to say.

Dana: (as the group walked away) Natalie, I…

Natalie: No, Dana, you are not taking a break or going anywhere near them.

Dana: Who says I want to do that?

Natalie: The look in your eye. You're desperate to find out what that was all about and I can't imagine why. You hate Danny James and his brother Nathan. What does it condition mean to you?

Dana: Nothing, of course…I just…

Natalie: You just need to get back to work. Now forget about sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong, just for once? (Natalie turned to speak to a woman who walked up to the desk)

Dana: (to herself) What is Darian going to say to them about Nathan? Is he going to get better? And if he does, what am I going to do? How am I going to come up with that money? How!?

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; Glenn's office. Glenn, A.J. and Lucas are there.

Glenn: I really have no intention of continuing with this inquisition? Don't you have any decency?

Lucas: What I have is a kid that who is facing murder charges for a murder that he may not have committed. If I have to step on a few toes to get to the truth, I'll do it.

Glenn: But, you haven't gotten anything. You're obviously trying to prove there was a relationship between my daughter and Nathan. You still haven't done that.

A.J.: The fact that she got her birth control in Southtown means nothing to you? Even if she was afraid you'd find out about the birth control pills despite the fact that her doctor couldn't tell you anything, why go to the Southtown Community Clinic. Darian was Nate's doctor and that's where he saw Nate for his examinations.

Glenn: That is just a coincidence.

Lucas: Yeah, one more, huh? Amazing how they keep piling up. (Pause) So, how is this for yet another one? I spoke to some of the people working at the clinic that day. They remember Candice coming for her appointment. After all, who'd forget a pretty white girl like her in a predominately African-American part of town. They remember she was very scared and quite nervous. However, they didn't remember her as Candice Dailey; they remember the alias she used.

A.J.: (surprised) Alias?

Glenn: You are really sounding ridiculous, Lucas.

Lucas: Really? Does the fact she used the name Nora Watkins mean anything?

Glenn: Of course not. Why should it?

A.J.: (a realization coming over him) I know why. Because Nora Watkins is Nathan's mother's maiden name.

Glenn: (stunned as he looked stricken. He hesitated before continuing) Oh come on! You're reaching now!

A.J.: And you can't keep ignoring this…not anymore!

Lucas: Yes, we're reaching for the truth. It's time you did too. Your daughter is very close to Nathan…some say too close. She is reluctant to marry her boyfriend at exactly the same time. Furthermore, she has birth control pills she drove out of her way to get and used a name that just so happens to be very meaningful to Nathan to get them. I tell you, there are too many coincidences for me to ignore. There's also something else I can't ignore.

Glenn: Which is?

Lucas: You told the police that you were the last person to see your daughter alive…that you talked until around ten o'clock when she said she was going out to get some milk for breakfast in the morning just as you were going to bed.

Glenn: Yes. I told her to let it wait and I would get up early and do it, but she said no. (He paused, looking pained) I should've insisted.

Lucas: And as you know, Candice never made it to the store. No one remembers seeing her there.

Glenn: Right. The James kid grabbed her before she could get there.

Lucas: So you and the police say…even though there is no proof. However, there is proof of something else. See, the police were so eager to nab the first guy that came along that all you and my misguided brother had to do was point the finger at Nathan James and they arrested him. They never looked anyplace else.

Glenn: That's because there is no place else. You're forgetting Candice was…raped and that Nathan James' semen was found on her body. DNA doesn't lie.

A.J.: It doesn't, but if Candice and Nathan had consensual sex earlier that day as Nathan claims, that would certainly explain the presence of semen.

Lucas: But there's something even more important than that.

Glenn: Which is?

Lucas: I talked to your neighbors.

Glenn: My neighbors?

Lucas: Yes and they were very talkative about what happened at your house the night Candice was killed. I know your dirty little secret...what you neglected to mention to the police. I know what you did to your daughter.

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; the Intensive Care Unit; outside Nathan's room. Harry and Nikki are there.

Nikki: Nina? I saw her at school earlier.

Harry: And did you speak?

Nikki: Not really. Nina told me this morning that you told her to say away from me…that you didn't want us to be friends anymore.

Harry: Yes, I did.

Nikki: And do you think that was the right thing to do? Nina and I have been friends since we kids. She's like a sister to me and I know she feels the same way.

Harry: But you are not sisters. She is the child of an employee; you really shouldn't even be involved in one another's lives. It isn't proper.

Nikki: Mr. Tamakai, this isn't "Upstairs, Downstairs". You and your kids have always been treated like family. I thought you liked it that way.

Harry: I am glad my employers appreciate the work I do and there was a time I was glad Nina had friends. But you are an undue influence, Nikki. I don't mean to be rude or out of line, but Nina can be very impressionable and I don't want her disobeying me like you disobey my parents.

Nikki: Do you think that's fair? Nina hasn't done anything to make you believe she would ever disobey you.

Harry: You're right, she hasn't. And I don't want her to start. Keeping her away from you is a way to avoid that.

Nikki: You know, I'm not some horrible kid. So my parents and I disagree from time to time. It happens.

Harry: It's not going to happen to my daughter. I have great respect for your mother and father…they have been very good to me. But they are very permissive parents, which is why you feel free to do as you please.   I want Nina to get a good education and graduate from school and go on to one of the top colleges in this country.

Nikki: And you think I'm going to stop her from doing that?

Harry: Nikki, I know how many days you've missed class playing hooky. I know that your grades aren't the best because you've got your mind on young men or this distasteful murder investigation. If you want to ruin your life before it even begins, you are welcome to do so. But you won't take my daughter with you. I've protected her from every negative influence in her life in any way I can. I won't hesitate to do the same with you.

Nikki: You know, Mr. Tamakai, some would say you are rude to the daughter of your employer and consider it insubordination.

Harry: Some would. But I have the feeling that your mother would agree with me, don't you? (Nikki glared angrily at Harry as he walked away, passing by Angela and Jake, who were coming down the hallway)

Angela: Well, Jake, I tried to contact Eric.  He’s not answering his page so there’s nothing I can do.

Jake: You're not too upset about that, are you?

Angela: I won't even try to lie to you, Jake. I'm ecstatic. But let's forget about Eric and think about why Darian called us here. What could be going on with Nathan?

Jake: I don't know. I just hope it's good news and he's coming out of his coma.

Angela: Just in time to be convicted of murder.

Nikki: (having overheard Angela) Don't you think that's unfair to say? There hasn't even been a trial.

Jake: Nikki, don't you think it's rude to eavesdrop?

Nikki: I wasn't eavesdropping, Det. Collier. You were talking loud enough for anyone to hear.

Angela: Then maybe you shouldn't comment on things that don't concern you. (Pause) You're A.J.'s cousin, Nikki, aren't you?

Nikki: Yeah. You're Angela, Melody's sister, right?

Angela: (condescendingly) Det. Sorensen.

Nikki: Well, Det. Sorensen, Nathan is innocent. The cops made a mistake.

Angela: Apparently you've been talking to your cousin, A.J.. You're as wrong as he is. In your favor, you've got youth to explain your ignorance.

Jake: (warily) Angela…!

Darian: (walking up; Christina, Sabrina and Danny behind him) Good, you're both here.

Jake: Darian, what is this all about?

Darian: Where's Eric?

Angela: (impatiently) He couldn't make it. Is this important? What could you possibly know about this case?

Christina: Especially since you're no longer Nathan's doctor!

Darian: Now that you're all here, let's go in my office and we'll…

Danny: Let's not go anywhere, Darian. Why don't you tell us what this is all about now?

Nikki: I'd like to hear this too…especially if it means it's going to help Nathan.

Sabrina:  Do you have some sort of evidence that he's innocent?

Darian: I'm hoping it will. For right now I'm concerned about saving his life.

Christina: Don't you think it's a bit too late for you to be making a diagnosis in this case?

Darian: No, I'm right on time. (Pause) I found out what caused Nathan's heart attack.

Christina: I thought we already decided it was your negligence that did it?

Danny: Are you able to shut up or are you afraid you might poison yourself with that nasty tongue of yours?

Darian: Can we tone down the insults…at least for a few minutes? (Pause) Nathan's heart attack was not due to any negligence of any sort. He was poisoned…someone tried to kill him.

Sabrina: Murder!?

Nikki: What? But why?!

Danny: Who did it?!

Christina: Where's your proof!? Or is this some attempt to clear what you laughingly call your good name?

Darian: This is my proof. (Darian handed Jake the file he'd been holding) It's a toxicology report I had run on Nathan.

Christina: You had a toxicology report run on my patient!?

Darian: I had no choice. You refused when I asked you.

Christina: So you went behind my back and did it!? Do you realize how unethical that is!?

Darian: I'm real cool with my ethics…can you say the same?

Sabrina: (turning to Jake) Is he telling the truth? Was Nathan poisoned?  Did someone try to murder my client?

Jake: (nodding) Yes, it seems that’s exactly what happened.

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; Intensive Care Unit. Nathan's room. Nina is there, looking in horror as Nathan holds her hand.

Nina: Oh, God! Nathan: (murmuring) Ohhohh

Nina: Let me call the nurse or your doctor. They'll be able to help!

Nathan: No! (He gripped Nina's wrist tightly)

Nina: Nathan! (She tried to pull away from him, but his grip was too tight) Nathan! Let me go! You're hurting me!

Nathan: I can't let you go! I can't let you leave me…Candice! You can't go, Candice…  I won’t let you leave me…  I’ll do whatever I have to stop you!
