EPISODE 92

“DADDY’S HOME”

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; the corridor outside of Dr. Glenn Dailey's office. A.J. Lassiter, Melody Sorensen, Dr. Gloria Dailey, Lucas Greyhawk, Dr. Zachary Dailey, Dr. Laura Dailey-Harrison, Det. Jake Collier and Det. Angela Sorensen are there.

A.J.: (concern on the face) Something happened at my place? What?

Melody: (looking around the group of people gathered) Look, everyone … I appreciate your concern for me. And I'm certainly glad I can't be missing for a few hours without people worrying, but I'm fine. I'm really fine. I'd like to have a few minutes alone with A.J., if that's okay.

Gloria: Sure, Melody. We understand. I'm just glad you're safe and sound.

Jake: Yes, we're all glad.

Melody: Well that's sweet of you. (She gave Jake a hug and Jake looked slightly uncomfortable)

A.J.: Why don't we go to the cafeteria? I'm starving and you can tell me what's up.

Melody: You got it. See you all later. (A.J. and Melody walked away)

Lucas: (his arms crossed) Well, another crisis averted.

Gloria: (shaking her head) Thank God.

Zachary: It has been a rough day, hasn't it?

Gloria: (sighing) Some would say nearly unbearable.

Jake: Well, if you'll excuse us, Angela and I have work to do.

Gloria: (puzzled) Is there something else going on? Melody had nothing to do with why you came?

Jake: We had no idea anyone was concerned with Melody's whereabouts until a minute ago. We're here to speak to Glenn.

Zachary: Why? What has he done?

Laura: (annoyed) Zachary! (Pause) Why do you want to talk to my father?

Jake: I'm afraid we can't get into it right now. If you'll excuse us. (Jake and Angela walked to Glenn's door and Jake knocked. The door flung open and Glenn stood there)

Glenn: It's about time you...! (He stopped short when he saw Jake and Angela)  Det. Collier?  Det. Sorensen? What are the two of you doing here?

Jake: Dr. Dailey, we'd like to talk to you.

Glenn: About what? (He glared at Lucas, who was watching) Damn, you Lucas! I thought you...!

Lucas: Before you make a fool of yourself, Dr. Dailey, I have no idea why the police want to talk to you. Not that I'm not interested.

Angela: (turning to Lucas) But, it's clearly none of your business. (She turned to Glenn) Can we come in, Dr. Dailey?

Glenn: (hesitantly) I am very busy. I have an important meeting in a few minutes.

Jake: I'm sorry we're interrupting your day, but we have to talk to you. It can't wait.

Glenn: Everything is urgent with you people. (He motioned inside his office) Come in.

(Jake and Angela walked in and the door closed behind them)

Zachary: (turning to Lucas) Any idea what that was about?

Lucas: No. Should I?

Zachary: From the look on my father's face, you and he had some sort of conflict.

Lucas: We had words.

Zachary: What about? You two hardly know one another ... in fact, I didn't even know you were in town.

Lucas: I got back a few days ago.

Zachary: (suspiciously) And what brings you back to Covington Bay … or do I need to ask?

Lucas: Do you have something to say to me, Zachary?

Zachary: It can't be a coincidence that you show your face in town at the same time the Lassiters are having all these problems.

Lucas: For the record, it is a coincidence. I didn’t come back to town to watch A.J. and company go up in flames. (He grinned) That was just a lucky break.

Gloria: Haven't you learned by now how destructive this war between our families are? Don't you know how ugly this is going to get? It's only going to be a matter of time before the Lassiters strike back and the situation gets worse.

Lucas: Dr. Dailey, why are you making the Greyhawks to be the villains? We're not the ones who stashed a wife away from six years. Nor did we physically assault someone.

Gloria: I am well aware of my sons' actions and I neither condone nor defend them. But the stories that came out of the Times were nasty and gossipy.

Lucas: Dr. Dailey, I understand your anger, but you're forgetting that…

Sabrina: (walking up) I just saw Melody and A.J. headed for the cafeteria. Does that mean everything is all right?

Gloria: They're fine. Everything is okay in that department.

Sabrina: Good. (Pause) Lucas, what are you doing here?

Lucas: I had a few questions to ask Dr. Dailey.

Gloria: (surprised) You knew Lucas was back in town?

Sabrina: (nervously) Yes.

Gloria: And how did you come by that information? I didn't know you knew Lucas all that well.

Sabrina: I don't, but…

Laura: Before we get into that, Lucas still hasn't explained what he wanted Daddy for. Does it have anything to do with why Jake and Angela just went in to see him?

Lucas: I can't really answer that.

Laura: Why not?

Sabrina: (as she and Lucas exchanged glances) Lucas, could you wait downstairs? There are a few things I'd like to talk to you about. I'll meet you in a few minutes.

Lucas: Whatever. (Smirking, he glared at Zachary, Laura and Gloria) Reunions are so wonderful, don't you think? (Lucas walked away)

Zachary: (disgusted) That guy is as annoying as ever. Sabrina, what is it with the two of you?

Gloria: Yes. I feel as if the rest of us are missing a few pages in this story.

Sabrina: (nervously) Gloria, I really didn't want to talk to you about this ... not now.

Gloria: Really? Now seems like a good time to me. So what's going on?

Sabrina: You know Lucas is a private investigator, right?

Gloria: I think I've heard A.J. mention it.

Sabrina: Well, he's one of the best. His business in LA is very successful. And I thought I could use him here on the Nathan James case.

Gloria: (surprised) He's working for you?

Sabrina: Yes, to clear Nathan's name.

Gloria: Why didn't you tell me about it?

Sabrina: Because I didn't know how you'd feel about it ... and I was waiting for the right time.

Gloria: Sabrina, you've had to of known about this for weeks. You don't think you could've mentioned it in all that time?

Sabrina: Look, I... (Just then Gloria's name was called over the P.A., asking her to report to the fifth floor)

Gloria: (glancing at her watch) Oh, I'll bet that's my patient waiting for me.   I better go.

Sabrina: Can we talk about this later?

Gloria: (sternly) Don't worry. We will. (Gloria walked away)

Sabrina: (sighing) I wasn't quite ready for that.

Zachary: And I can't believe what I just heard. You're supposed to be Gloria's best friend; how could you do this to her, especially after what Lucas' family has done to A.J. and Eric!

Laura: Zachary, calm down.

Sabrina: Zachary, I am well aware of the rotten blood between the Greyhawks and the Lassiters ... and I hired Lucas long before this new situation began.

Zachary: But he still has a bad reputation. And he and A.J. have been rivals since they were kids. Lucas probably only took this case because he knew A.J. was trying to get evidence to clear Nate and wanted to use the opportunity to show A.J. up. How could you work with someone so unscrupulous?

Sabrina: I admit Lucas' ethics are a bit skewed, but he's the best PI available. And I need the best if I'm going to save Nathan's life. I thought you wanted the same thing?

Zachary: Of course. But Lucas Greyhawk isn't the only good PI available. Now that you've seen what his family has done, you are going to fire him, aren't you?

Sabrina: I really don't think that's an option. Lucas has been working on this case for awhile now ... I can't afford the time it would lose to bring someone else in, especially now that Nathan's regained consciousness.

Zachary: (surprised) He has?

Sabrina: Yes ... a little while ago.

Laura: That's good news.

Zachary: And how is he? Is he going to recover from the heart attack?

Sabrina: It wasn't a heart attack ... at least not one as we know it.

Zachary: I don't get it.

Sabrina: An experimental drug called Qualamethite poisoned Nathan. Ever heard of it?

Zachary: No. Should I have?

Sabrina: I suppose not. It's similar to Quinine in that it's used to combat malaria.

Laura: Oh, I remember reading about this … it deals with some of the new strains of malaria popping up in South America, right?

Sabrina: Exactly. And also like Quinine, in high doses, it can cause a heart attack.

Zachary: And Nathan was given that drug? Sabrina, are you certain? I can't imagine an accident like that happening.

Sabrina: It wasn't an accident. (Pause) Someone tried to kill Nathan.

Laura: Good Lord!

Zachary: Do they have any idea who would do it? Or why?

Sabrina: Not yet. That's why Jake and Angela wanted to talk to your father.

Laura: As I asked before, what does my dad have to do with any of this?

Sabrina: The drugs that were stolen probably came from the hospital. Glenn can help facilitate a search.

Zachary: Plus, he would be a suspect, right? You're probably thinking that too, aren't you?

Laura: Zachary, how could you even suggest a thing?

Zachary: Dad hated Nathan, Laura. And he'd certainly know about the drug. Certainly enough to raise my suspicions.

Sabrina: Strangely enough, mine too.

Scene:  Covington Bay Medical Center; the cafeteria.  A.J. and Melody are sitting at a table, having lunch.

A.J.:  So, what happened at my place?

Melody:  Actually, I'm kind of embarrassed to say.

A.J.:  Melody, I'm a Lassiter.  We know all about being embarrassed.  I'm sure whatever you have to say can't be all that bad.

Melody:  It's not ... not really, I guess.  (Pause) I just ... I was at your place and I heard something in the kitchen ... a glass breaking. I thought it was you.

A.J.:  (alarmed)  You heard someone in my apartment?

Melody:  Don't worry, A.J., it's not what you think.   When I went into the kitchen, it turned out there was an open window.  The glass was at the end of the table and the wind must've blown it off.  It is kind of windy today.

A.J.:  (curiously) Okay ... that makes sense, though I don't remember leaving any windows open.

Melody:  You must have.

A.J.:  (shrugging) I guess so.  But, why are you embarrassed?

Melody:  Well, a bird flew into the kitchen and I screamed like a banshee.  I grabbed a broom and tried to get it out.

A.J.:  And did you?

Melody:  Yeah, but I'm afraid I knocked over a few dishes in the process.  I caused quite a mess. It was a nightmare cleaning it up.

A.J.:  (grinning) And knowing you, the place was cleaner than before the broken dishes.

Melody:  (smiling)  Given your housekeeping abilities, probably.   I'm just sorry it happened.

A.J.:  Melody, it's not a big deal.  It's just a few plates and glasses is all.  Don't worry about it.

Melody:  Some of those plates were very expensive china that your mother gave you when you moved into that apartment.

A.J.:   And they can be replaced.  You can't imagine how many of those I've broken myself.  (A.J. leaned over and kissed Melody on the lips)  Mel, I appreciate your being concerned about those dishes, but in the great scheme of things, it's really not all that important.

Melody:  (sighing) I guess with what happened with Eric, probably not.

A.J.:  You got that right. (Pause) At least Nigel Greyhawk dropped the charges.  I'm trying to assume that's a good thing.

Melody:  You can't want to see your brother behind bars?

A.J.:  No, but I would like to see Eric being held accountable for his actions.   He's just going to walk away from this as if it never happened, just like everything else in his life.

Melody:  You don't think he'll learn from this?

A.J.:  Has Eric ever learned his lesson about anything?

Melody:  No, he hasn't. (Pause) Why do you think Nigel dropped the charges?  Surely the Greyhawks would get a lot out of seeing Eric behind bars.

A.J.:  I can't begin to imagine why Nigel acted as he did.

Melody: Maybe it's part of the Greyhawk's plan.

A.J.: (shaking his head) No. That's not Nigel's style. He never wanted to be involved in the family feud. He certainly wouldn’t get immersed into it now. I'm inclined to think Nigel realized how destructive it could get for everyone if this went any further and gave my brother a lucky break.

Melody: How can you stay supportive of Eric after he after he showed up at your place this morning and gave you that black eye?

A.J.: (sighing) It doesn't make brotherly relations any easier. But, given the trouble Eric was in, I tried to over look it when I went down to the station. Of course, Eric didn't appreciate it.

Melody: You still haven't told me how that all came about. Why did he hit you?

A.J.:  Does it matter?

Melody: Since you're being evasive about it, I'd say so.

A.J.:  (waving his hand) Melody, it's not important.

Melody:  A.J., it's been my experience that the things you don't think are important, turn out to be very significant.  Now what was the fight with Eric about?

A.J.:  (hesitating) It was about Patricia.

Melody:  (uncomfortably)  I see.

A.J.: Eric heard about the marriage and came over to give me a hard time about it.

Melody:  You and Eric were arguing about your estranged wife ... so much so that it led to a fistfight? She really inflames passion in people, doesn't she?

Scene: Outside of Greyhawk Manor. Two cars pull up in front of the mansion. Nigel Greyhawk gets out of one car and Eric Lassiter the other.

Nigel: (closing the car door as Eric rushed to the front door) Eric, wait.

Eric: (annoyed; turning to face Nigel) What?

Nigel: Let's hold on for a minute.

Eric: (impatiently) Why? I'm real anxious to get this over with.

Nigel: (testily) Just the thought of spending time with your daughter gives you hives, doesn't it?

Eric: No, it's being in this house. (angrily) It stinks of Greyhawk.

Nigel: (his teeth clenching) Eric, don't fool with me. I already told you I will not tolerate that kind of talk … especially around Vicki.

Eric: I remember what you said … you've repeated it often enough.

Nigel: Then start acting like it. You will keep a civil tongue and treat everyone in this house with respect … including my father. If you can't do that, this deal is off and I'll see you at the trial when you're tried and convicted for assaulting me.

Eric: (smirking) Don't worry, tough guy. I'll be on my best behavior.

Nigel: No, you'll do better than that. I will not have you creating havoc for my family…this is going to be difficult as it is.

Eric: I can imagine. It's going to be real interesting to find out what your father is going to say when he finds out what you've done. (His smirk grew wider)  Watching that is going to be worth the price of admission.

Nigel: (dismissively) I really think you're making too much of this, Eric.

Eric: You can't believe that? (He chuckled) Quentin Greyhawk lives to destroy my family…he has waited for years to have the chance to see one of us in jail, completely ruined. You just took that chance away from him, and for what?

Nigel: For the sake of a child.

Eric: Do you think he cares about a kid's hurt feelings when he can have revenge?

Nigel: My father happens to care about Vicki very much

Eric: Please, the man is capable of caring about anything past his own need for revenge. But even if I thought he gave a damn about Vicki, he hasn't forgotten that she is my daughter … she is a Lassiter.

Nigel: That doesn't matter to him … it has never mattered. He has always treated Vicki like family; like his own grandchild. In his mind, that's what she is.

Eric: You give him too much credit.

Nigel: Look, don't worry about this. My father is my concern. Why don't you focus on mustering up some paternal feelings for Vicki? Are you ready to handle that?

Eric: She's a kid. What's to handle?

Nigel: Spoken like someone who knows nothing about parenting.

Eric: You are one cool customer. I can't believe you're not sweating up a storm knowing the roof is going to fall in on your head … and dear old Dad is going to be the one to bring it down on you.

Nigel: Eric, I will make him understand I did the right thing. He might be upset at first, but he'll realize that I did what I had to. He raised me to look out for your family first and foremost…and I'm only doing what he taught me. In the end, he won't fault me for it.

Scene: Greyhawk Manor; the living room. Monica Lassiter-Greyhawk and Hillary Sorensen are there.

Monica:  Quentin knew what damage he was going to cause and didn't care.  All he wanted was revenge and damn who gets in the way of his quest.  He won't stop ... he won't stop for anyone.  He might be sorry we got hurt ... he might even regret it.   But it wouldn't stop him from doing it again if he had to.  We have to leave this house ... there's no other way.  I have to make Nigel see that getting out of here is what we have to do and we have to do it now.

Quentin's Voice:    Do you really think you’re going to be able to get away with that?

Monica:  (startled; turning to face her father-in-law, who looked enraged)   Quentin!  We're you listening to my private conversation?

Quentin:  (stalking in)  This is my house and as far as I'm concerned there is little that goes on that is private ... especially when it concerns my sons.

Monica:  Look, Quentin, I really don't think...!

Quentin:  Think?  Apparently you aren't thinking at all if you think I'm going to let the likes of you take my son away from me!  That will never happen!   Never!

Monica: (stunned) The likes of me? What is that supposed to mean?

Hillary: (interrupting) Let's calm down here, shall we?

Quentin: How can I remain calm when I'm being betrayed under my own roof?

Monica: Quentin, I have not betrayed you.

Quentin: Really? Didn't I just hear you say you want to take Nigel away from this house and force him to quit his job?

Monica: I am just doing what is best for my family. I have to look out for my daughter and my husband. You certainly aren't going to do it; you're too busy planning your next method of attack against the Lassiters!

Quentin: Monica, I realize that you are upset about what happened this morning … believe me, I'm upset too.

Monica:   Pardon me if I have trouble believing you. I guess I can't get past the look of unadulterated joy in your eyes when Eric was hauled out of her in handcuffs while his eight-year-old daughter watched!

Quentin: I am truly sorry if Vicki was hurt in all this. It's why I came home … to see how she was.

Monica: (sarcastically) She's devastated … thanks for the concern.

Quentin: Monica, just because things are a little uncomfortable for the child is no reason for you to turn against me.

Monica: I am not turning against you … and I don't want Nigel to end his relationship with you. I realize he loves you very much. But, this house … this hostile environment is something we cannot be part of. When Melody was made to look a fool of after you splashed the news of A.J.'s marriage to Patricia Tamakai all over the Covington Bay Times, I told you how upset I was that my family was hurt in your quest for revenge. And you told me that you would do whatever you could to make sure nothing like that would ever happen again.

Quentin: I told you I'd do my best.

Monica: I stand corrected. Of course, you weren't being quite honest since you already had the story about Eric being some rogue, racist cop ready for publication.

Quentin: Are you calling me a liar?

Monica: Can you deny that when you told me you would not do anything to hurt my family that you didn't already have the story about Eric about to hit the stands?

Quentin: I can't believe you're so eager to paint me the villain. Eric Lassiter is a menace to this town. You don't think the public needs to know whom they are entrusting to save their lives to?

Monica: Quentin, like most of the things your paper publishes, that article was full of half-truths and innuendo. God knows Eric is not the most open-minded man in the word, but he's not the virulent bigot the Times made him out to be.

Quentin: And I guess you're blaming me for Eric coming over here and attacking Nigel? It's my fault that your ex-husband is an animal who can't control his violent tendencies?

Monica: I am hardly excusing what Eric has done and I hope he is made to pay for it. But you knew he would retaliate somehow. Eric is not the kind of man to ignore having his name dragged through the mud. The point is that you knew that this article would hurt my child and I in some fashion and you didn't care. It didn't stop you. Well, I can't continue to stay under this roof waiting and wondering what you'll do next that is going to hurt the most important people in the world to me!

Quentin: Monica, you really shouldn't overreact. Be reasonable. We will get through this. Nigel's wounds will heal and Vicki will pull through this … especially after her father is in jail for his crimes.

Monica: You're really going to let it go that far?

Quentin: Of course.

Monica: How is that going to help anyone?

Quentin: Don't you want to see justice done? I can't understand why you being so protective of Eric after the pain he's caused you.

Monica: This isn't about justice done, Quentin. You just want revenge, plain and simple and I'm really not interested in sticking around here and watching you crow about seeing Eric locked up. It's bad enough that I have to explain this to Vicki, not to mention seeing what being teased and talked about by everyone in this town is going to do to her.

Quentin: I'm not responsible for your daughter's unfortunate lineage. Surely you must've known that Eric Lassiter would be an embarrassment as a man and a father before you let yourself get involved with him?

Monica: My relationship with Eric really isn't up for discussion. Just know that I will do whatever I can to protect my daughter and leaving this house is the only way I know how to do it.

Quentin: (his tone threatening) You cannot take Nigel away from his family.

Monica: But he won't be. Vicki and I are his family and should be his top priority now. How many times have you said a man should always put his wife and child's needs above everything else?

Quentin: Except for one thing … Vicki is not Nigel's child.

Monica: (shaking her head) You know, why doesn’t it surprise me you'd pull that card?

Hillary: That is really uncalled for, Quentin.

Quentin: But, it is the truth. I care about the child, but she is not a Greyhawk.

Monica: So when she calls you "Grandfather", what does that mean to you? Nothing, because she doesn't have your blood running through your veins? Thank God it doesn’t matter to Nigel. He still loves Vicki and he always will; it doesn't matter who her father is. And once he thinks about what I asked, he'll do what's best for us.

Quentin: (surprised) You've already discussed this with Nigel?

Monica: Yes.

Quentin: (anxiously) And what did he say? Surely he didn't give your ridiculous notion even the slightest consideration?

Monica: Quentin, you know Nigel would never dismiss me out of hand.

Quentin: (shaking his head) Monica, I really don't think you've realized what a mistake you've made. (His voice took a grim turn) But, you're about to find out.

Scene:  Covington Bay Medical Center; Dr. Glenn Dailey's office.  Glenn, Det. Jake Collier and Det. Angela Sorensen are there.

Glenn:  (surprised) Nathan James was poisoned? How?

Jake:  Have you ever heard of a drug called Qualamethite?

Glenn:  Sure.  It's a drug being used to treat new forms of malaria.   It's still in the experimental stage though.  The FDA hasn't approved it yet.

Jake:  Is it true that if drug is administered in high doses, it can cause cardiac depression?

Glenn: Yes. (Pause) And that caused the heart attack? Are you saying someone tried to murder him right here in the hospital?

Angela:  It would seem so.  And it's possible that the drugs were stolen from here.   We need your help in finding that out.

Glenn:  (sarcastically) Great, that's just what this hospital needs ... more police parading around here, conducting an investigation.  This hospital is still getting press about that fiasco with A.J., now you want to let the world know that the patients can be murdered in their beds? I'd ask if you could keep it quiet, but I know the cops in this town have no discretion.

Angela: Dr. Dailey, let's not get off track, shall we? Could you please help us try to find out if the drugs were stolen from this hospital?

Glenn: Fine, but as I said, let's get this over with. I have a meeting very soon.

Angela: You might be a little late for that meeting. We will need you to answer a few questions afterward.

Glenn: I don't know what I can do to help you. I don't know anything about this.

Angela:  Are you certain about that?

Glenn:  (angrily) You're not accusing me of trying to kill the James boy, are you? Do you think I could be foolish enough to steal drugs from my own hospital to do it with?

Angela:  Dr. Dailey, let's be honest.  You disliked Nathan from the moment he entered your daughter's life.

Glenn: Because I knew he was dangerous. And it turned out I was right.

Angela: And you've made no secret of the fact you believe he killed her. You are chief of staff of this hospital and you knew about the drug.

Glenn:  That may be true ... but I didn't do it.  I want him to pay for his crimes ... and believe me I want him dead.  But I believe in the legal system and I know it will triumph when that boy is sentenced to death. I really don't appreciate being accused of this!

Jake:  Right now, Dr. Dailey, we're not accusing you of anything.  Let's concentrate on finding out if the drugs were stolen from this hospital ... and who had access to them.

Glenn:  Never forgetting that I could be one of those people, right?

Scene:  Covington Bay Medical Center; outside Glenn's office.   Sabrina Collier, Dr. Laura Dailey-Harrison and Dr. Zachary Dailey are there.

Laura:  I can't believe what I'm hearing!  I know you hate my father, Sabrina, you've never denied that. But this is outrageous!

Zachary: Laura, you have to admit it's possible.

Laura:  Both of you are willing to paint Dad a murderer without any proof whatsoever?  Don't you think he deserves the benefit of the doubt?   You're doing that for Nathan with a lot more evidence against him.

Sabrina:  Maybe, but Nathan's not known for his despicable behavior.

Laura:  And our father doesn't have a criminal record, does he? (Pause) I know you believe that Dad's wanting to save his marriage makes him the Devil Incarnate, but attempted murder?  That's something else entirely.  I will never believe him capable of it, no matter how much he hated Nathan James.

Zachary: Laura, I know first hand the pain our father causes people he claims to love.   What would he do to someone he hates?

(Just then, the door to Glenn's office opened and Glenn, Jake and Angela walked out)

Laura:  Daddy!  Is everything all right?

Glenn:  It's fine, Laura.

Sabrina:  (smirking) You wouldn't happen to be taking Glenn into custody, would you?   That would be a Kodak moment.

Glenn:  Of course not! (He turned to Jake and Angela) Can we just get it over with?

Zachary:  What's going on?  Is Dad a suspect in Nathan's poisoning?

Jake:  Right now we're simply trying to piece together how it all came about.   Let's not jump to any conclusions.

(Glenn, Jake and Angela walked away)

Sabrina:  With that guy, it's hard not to. (Pause)  Well, I better go find Lucas.  Excuse me.  (Sabrina walked away)

Zachary:  I hope she's going to fire Greyhawk.  I can't believe she hired him in the first place no matter how good a P.I. he's supposed to be.

Laura:  Aren't you least concerned about our father?

Zachary: After what he's done to Gloria, it's really hard for me to muster any sympathy for the man.

Laura: Gloria.  It's always about her.

Zachary:  Laura, please.  Not now.

Laura:  Zachary, it's so obvious you have a thing for Gloria. It's one reason why you hate our father so much, why you're so eager to believe he could be a killer … not to forget your incessant need to see he and Gloria divorce. Why can't you just admit the truth?

Zachary:  I told you...!

Laura:  I know what you told me.  You claimed to have no feelings for Gloria other than friendship, but I don't believe that anymore.  You have feelings for her, don't you?  Just be honest!

Zachary:  (hesitating)  All right.  I do.  I have feelings for her. You happy now? I admitted it.

Laura: (shaking her head) No, Zachary, I'm not happy … not happy at all.

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center cafeteria. A.J. Lassiter and Melody Sorensen are sitting at a table.

A.J.: Passion? Melody, the only thing that woman inflames in me is anger and disdain. How many times do I have to tell you that she means nothing to me?

Melody: Oh, I know she doesn't. I guess I'm just a little sensitive when it comes to her is all.

A.J.: I understand. She's been like this cancer in our lives from the minute she showed up at my apartment. And it seems like no matter where I go or what I do, she pops up.

Melody: So you've seen her today?

A.J.: (groaning) No, but it's still early.

Melody: Well, I have seen her. She was here this morning.

A.J.: Why? Did she bother you?

Melody: Of course she bothered me. Her very existence bothers me … it's a constant reminder that she is your wife and I'm not.

A.J.: Melody, you don't have remind me of the mistake I made marrying that woman.

Melody: A.J., I don't think you realize how much this hurts … how fresh this pain is for me. Every time I start to get a little equilibrium and try and accept what has happened … and forgive you … she shows up throws it in my face that she is married to you and I start hurting all over again. What makes it worse is that she knows that. And she uses it.

A.J.: How?

Melody: A.J., I told you last night that she is after you. Her whole plan is to drive a wedge between us so she can have you for herself.

A.J.: Melody, I'm not sure I buy into that.

Melody: Why do you have blinders on where she is concerned? I know you grew up together … I know she's like family to you … but she is a deceitful, manipulative woman. She has done everything she can to worm her way into your life from the minute she came back here. And her whole motivation is that she wants your marriage to be a real one.

A.J.: Look, I agree that Patty is a liar and she is certainly manipulative. And believe me, I hate the things she's done since she's been back … especially her alliance with the Greyhawks. But as long as I have known her, she's never given any indication that she sees me anything more than a big brother she likes to pester. Don't you think I'd have noticed it if she were into me in the way you think she is?

Melody: Not if she's the accomplished liar she's proven herself to be. She'll hide it until she's ready for you to know the truth.

A.J.: And when would that be?

Melody: When she thinks she's got a fair shot at you.

A.J.: But that's never gonna happen. I love you.

Melody: I know you do … and I love you. But, Patricia could believe that we'll be unable to overcome our problems and break up.

A.J.: (slightly nervous) Do you believe there's a chance of that?

Melody: Honestly? (She shook her head) I think that we'll get through this. I love you too much to believe otherwise. Everything's going to work out for the best for us. It doesn't matter what she does.

A.J.: Mel, she can't do anything. She can't come between us. She doesn't have that kind of power.

Melody: I just wish she wasn't part of our lives at all.

A.J.: I feel the same way ... especially given that she's working for Quentin Greyhawk ... not to mention dating Lucas.

Melody: She's not really dating him. She's only doing it because she knows it bothers you. She probably thinks you might be jealous.

A.J.: Well, I'm not. What I am is concerned. Despite everything she'd done, I do care about her. I know that's hard for you to hear, but I don't want to see her get hurt and as long as she's around the Greyhawks, that is bound to happen. But I can't convince Patty of that. She's so stubborn, she refuses to listen.

Melody: A.J., it's really difficult for me to have sympathy for her given all she's done. Does she really deserve your help?

A.J.: No … and I've stopped trying to give it to her. Believe me, I have washed my hands of her and I'd really not have her be involved in my life at all. Unfortunately, since we're allies because of that damn mess with Victor Markham, I have no choice.

Melody: Is that why you and Lucas were together?

A.J.: What?

Melody: When I saw you, you were with Lucas.

A.J.: (sighing) That had nothing to do with Patty or Markham. (Pause) You know Lucas is working for Sabrina to get evidence that Nathan didn't kill Candice.  Well, he came up with some pretty important leads in the case ... found some evidence that will help Nathan.

Melody: You sound upset about that.

A.J.: Don't get me wrong. I'm want Nate to be acquitted. I know he's innocent.

Melody: You just don't like that Lucas came up with the evidence, right?

A.J.: I know it's petty, but he was so smug about getting evidence that I hadn't. He loves showing me up ... and I hate being shown up by him. (A.J. sighed) What's worse is that I should've found that evidence. I should've dug this whole thing up months ago. What kind of investigative reporter am I?

Melody: The kind with a lot on your plate. The Nathan James investigation isn't the only story you're working on. You also have friends and family that need you ... and a girlfriend who likes to have a lot of your attention. You can't blame yourself nor have doubts in your ability as an investigator because Lucas came up with a few clues that you didn't.

A.J.: Melody, I appreciate that, but obviously I haven't given this case the time it needs if Lucas can be in town for a few days and come up with what he has.

Melody: A.J., you shouldn't doubt yourself. Don't you realize that is what Lucas wants?

A.J.: (sighing) You're right, you're right. I shouldn't let him get to me. Ever since we were kids, he's always had this urge to compete with me about everything and I've always tried not to get sucked in. I don't want to play his kind of games ... especially when Nate's life is at stake.

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; the first floor lounge. Sabrina and Lucas are there.

Lucas: So someone tried to poison the James kid, huh?

Sabrina: According to Darian Jackson, yes.

Lucas: Any idea who?

Sabrina: No one yet. But Glenn Dailey is an obvious suspect.

Lucas: Because he believes Nathan killed his daughter.

Sabrina: Exactly.

Lucas: Any other suspects come to mind?

Sabrina: To be honest, Lucas, yes. But, I don't think you want to hear it.

Lucas: (grimly) You're talking about my brother, aren't you?

Sabrina: He has great antipathy for Nathan. Your family's company manufactures the drug so James would be aware of it. And he could've stolen the drug from here or the GMT Labs.

Lucas: So could a lot of people for a lot of reasons.

Sabrina: True, but your brother is a primary suspect. And so is your father for that matter.

Lucas: My father? Sabrina, now you're being ridiculous.

Sabrina: Really? Quentin Greyhawk's obsession about family loyalty is legendary. You don't think that if he believed Nathan murdered the woman his son loved that he might not kill out of revenge?

Lucas: No. And James wouldn't do it either.

Sabrina: You can't even consider it, can you?

Lucas: Haven't we been over this territory already? There's nothing to consider.

Sabrina:  I see.  Maybe you better resign from this case.

Lucas: What!?

Sabrina: You're too close to it. I should've seen something like this would happen.  Your family is too entangled in this for you to be objective.

Lucas: Now that is where you are wrong. I know the possibility exists that anyone in my family could have poisoned Nathan … or even killed Candice. But they wouldn't do it.

Sabrina: But what if they did? What if someone in your family was responsible for one or possibly both crimes?

Lucas: You think Nate's poisoning and Candice's murder are connected?

Sabrina: Anything is possible where this case is concerned. The point is, I need someone working for me who can see that. And I don't think you can. Your judgment is impaired.

Lucas: You're wrong. I can't effectively work this case.

Sabrina: Lucas, you didn't answer when I asked you what if someone in your family is responsible for these crimes. Would you going to turn them in and save our client … or lie to save your family?

Scene: Outside Greyhawk Manor. Nigel and Eric are standing in front of the house.

Eric: So, can we go in now?

Nigel: No. I want you to wait out here.

Eric: Why?

Nigel: I have to prepare Vicki and Monica. I can't just spring something like this on them.

Eric: Fine, I'll just hang out here and trim the shrubs? They look like they could use a little work

Nigel: Look at it this way, you can wait here for a few minutes or you can wait it out in a prison cell. It's your choice.

Eric: (scowling) Don’t be too long.

Nigel: (sarcastically) I'll put a move on just for you. (Nigel went inside, leaving Eric alone with his thoughts)

Eric: I still can't believe I agreed to this.   But damn it, I don’t have a frigging choice.  Like it or not… Daddy’s home.

Scene: Greyhawk Manor; the living room. Monica, Quentin and Hillary are there.

Monica: Quentin, that is the second time you've threatened me in the last five minutes. I'm starting to think you don't like me.

Quentin: Don't get me wrong, Monica. I do like you. I always have. I admit that when you first became involved with Nigel, I had my reservations given your history with the Lassiters.

Monica: I was all too aware that you were less than pleased about your son's choice of a wife. You feelings weren't exactly a secret.

Quentin: But, I was persuaded by Nigel and your own actions that you were a decent woman and you wanted to be a good wife to my son and a mother to his children.

Monica: That hasn't changed.

Quentin: And you think a good wife would alienate her husband from her family?

Monica: That is not what I'm doing. I'm sure Nigel will want to maintain a relationship with you and I won't object to that. I'm even willing to go along with him continuing to work at the family company. But I cannot continue to stay under this roof.

Quentin: Well, you're just going to have to live with the status quo, Monica, because Nigel isn't going anywhere.

Monica: That's for him to decide, Quentin, not you.

Quentin: I know what's best for my son … I know what he needs.

Monica: And I don't? Haven't you ever thought that I might know a little more about Nigel and what he needs than you?

Quentin: I have known Nigel his entire life; you've been married to him for two years. Don't even try and compare the relationships.

Monica: This is not a contest of who Nigel loves the most.

Quentin: But that's what you're making it. You want Nigel to choose between his family and you and your child. Do you really think that's a battle you can win?

Hillary: Quentin, I think that's about enough.

Monica: Oh, you bet it is. If I didn't know it before, I know it now … leaving this house is the best thing I can do.

Quentin: Believe me, Monica, I'm starting to agree with that. But, you'll do it without my son.

Nigel: (walking in) Monica, I… (Nigel stopped short when he saw his father) Dad! What are you doing here?

Quentin: I came home to see how your wife and her daughter were doing. Of course, my concern was hardly appreciated.

Nigel: What is that supposed to mean? (Pause as Nigel noted the tension on Monica and Quentin's faces) What is going on here?

Quentin: Your wife just informed me that she's planning on taking you away from this house and that she wants you to leave the business.

Nigel: (shocked) You told him that? Monica, we haven't even had a chance to discuss it.

Monica: Your father overheard me talking to Hillary about it.

Quentin: Don't tell me you're even considering leaving? Nigel, this is your home. How could you even think of letting anyone come between you and your family?

Nigel: Dad, no one is coming between us.

Quentin: What would you call your wife's demands that you leave the only home you've ever known?

Nigel: She's just upset about what happened with Eric … we all are.

Quentin: And ripping this family apart is the answer?

Nigel: I think you're over-reacting, Dad. We need to calm down and deal with this calmly.

Quentin: I will get calm … when you tell your wife that you are not, nor will you ever, leave this house!

Nigel: Dad, I think right now Monica and I need to be alone. There are things we need to discuss.

Quentin: That's obvious. Someone needs to clear things up around here.

Hillary: Maybe we should step outside and let Monica and Nigel talk. After all, it is their problem to work out. In the end, they are the ones who will decide exactly what happens here.

Quentin: I'll be in my study. I hope when I return you'll all have gained some sense. (Quentin walked out)

Hillary: I guess I should head back to the office.

Monica: Sis, could you stick around for a bit?

Hillary: Sure. I'll go upstairs and check on Vicki.

Monica: Thanks. (Hillary walked out) Nigel, I hope you see why we have to move out of this house. Your father cares about nothing but his own need to control everything and everyone around him. You should've heard the things he said to me.

Nigel: Monica, I really can't deal with that right now.

Monica: How your father treats your wife doesn’t matter to you?

Nigel: Of course it does ... and I want to hear about it. I just can't worry about that right now. We've got more immediate problems.

Monica: Like what?

Nigel: There's something I need to tell you. I thought about what you said, and ...

Monica: What?   Does this mean you've realized that we need to leave this house?

Nigel: Not exactly. But I have done something that is going to resolve our problems … at least as far as Vicki is concerned.

Monica: How?

Nigel: Well, I…

Eric: (walking in) Greyhawk, have you sprung the news on your wife and kid yet? I'm really tired of waiting out there.

Monica: (stunned) Eric, what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be in jail? My God, did you break out?

Eric: Oh, you haven't told her.

Nigel: I didn't have a chance.

Monica: Tell me what? Nigel, did you know he was here?

Nigel: (angrily) Yes, I brought him here. But, I'm starting to regret that decision already.

Monica: And what decision would that be? What is going on?

Eric: (smiling) In a word? Make room for Daddy.

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; outside of Glenn's office. Zachary and Laura are there.

Laura: How could you do this, Zachary? How could you!?

Zachary: Laura, I haven't done anything.

Laura: Really? What would you call having the hots for your father's wife and doing everything you can to break up their marriage!?

Zachary: I am not doing that. That marriage was a bad idea to begin with. It never should've happened.

Laura: Really? Because you have always hated our father? Because you don't love him so no one else should?

Zachary: Of course not, Laura. I've just seen how he control and manipulates everyone he touches. Candice ... you ... our mother. I hated seeing him do it to Gloria. I wanted to see her out of the marriage not for my sake, but for hers.

Laura: Is it easy to convince yourself of that because I don't believe it. I have seen you counsel Gloria into leaving our father ... how you badmouth him at every turn. And because she considers you a friend ... because she cares about you ... she listened to you. And you helped to ruin what was once a very happy marriage.

Zachary: You refuse to see any of that man's faults, don't you!?

Laura: No, I do not. I know he can be selfish and controlling. But despite that, he is still my father and I love him. And he loves his children.

Zachary: As long as they tow the line, right?

Laura: And is that what your attraction to Gloria is about, isn't it? It's your way of showing our father that he doesn't control you, that you do what you want when you want, right? Not to mention the satisfaction you get out of stealing your father's wife.

Zachary: Laura, I would never use Gloria to get back at Dad. My feelings for her are real. She really means something to me.

Laura: I'm sure she does. Honestly, I don't really think you would set out to hurt Dad or Gloria. But maybe you're doing it subconsciously. Maybe your disdain for our father is so strong that you're looking for a way to hurt him, even though you may not realize it.

Zachary: (shaking his head) That's not true.

Laura: So you deny your eagerness to see Dad and Gloria divorce has nothing to do with jealousy and you wanting her for yourself? You can honestly say it plays no part in it at all?

Zachary: (hesitating) No. I want to see the marriage end because I know it's best for her.

Laura: Because then you'll be together, right?

Zachary: No! Gloria and I will never be together. I know that. We'll never have a relationship. She doesn't see me that way. She has no clue about how I feel about her. I'm just a good friend.

Laura: Really? You haven't told her the truth.

Zachary: Of course not. I would never embarrass her ... or myself like that.

Laura: Good. I hope you keep it that way. Dad doesn't deserve that kind of pain ... especially now.

Zachary: Laura, you don't have to worry. Nothing will ever come of how I feel.

Laura: I'm glad you know that. I just wish you'd stay out of Dad and Gloria's marriage and let them work things out.

Zachary: What's to work out? It's over. Gloria would've gotten a divorce today if it weren't for ...

Laura: Zachary, I don't want to hear it. I know you think Dad was wrong in getting the divorce delayed, but I see no problem in waiting a few months until the trial is over.

Zachary: No matter how upset Gloria is.

Laura: Gloria's a sensible woman. She'll come to realize that there's no reason to rush things, especially now. (Pause) And who knows? These few months could be good for them. Maybe they can get some perspective and realize they have a marriage to save.

Zachary: That won't happen, Laura.

Laura: That isn't for you to decide, Zachary. I think you've interfered enough in Dad and Gloria's relationship. Maybe if you can stop pining over her long enough to see that, you'll do the right thing and leave them alone.

(At that moment, Jake, Angela and Glenn walked up)

Laura: Dad! Dad, what happened?

Glenn: I haven't been arrested. Sorry to disappoint you, Zachary.

Zachary: (ignoring his father) Jake, your mother explained to us about what happened with Nathan. Do you think the drug was stolen from the hospital?

Jake: Actually, now we're sure of it. There was a medical cabinet that was broken into and Qualamethite was among the drugs stolen.

Zachary: Any suspects?

Jake: Too many.

Laura: So what happens now?

Jake: The Crime Lab is dusting the area.

Glenn: (interrupting) And leaving it a mess.

Jake: (ignoring Glenn) Maybe we'll get some prints, maybe not.

Angela: We'll get lots of prints ... a lot of people had access to that cabinet, but I doubt we will find any belonging to Nate's attacker. Anyone smart enough to know about that drug's effects wouldn't be foolish enough to leave prints all over the scene. (Pause) Dr. Dailey, we will need to talk to you.

Glenn: I already told you I don't know anything ... and I certainly didn't poison that boy.

Angela: But you did have means, motive and opportunity. And there's no getting around that.

Gloria: (walking up) Jake, Angela... I've been looking for you.

Jake: Aunt Gloria, something wrong?

Gloria: For once I don't have bad news. I just saw Darian. He tells me Nathan has regained consciousness and is able to talk.

Jake: That's great!

Angela: I guess the questioning will have to wait, Dr. Dailey. Nathan might be able to tell us who did this to him all by himself.

(Jake and Angela walked away)

Laura: I hope Nathan can tell the police something ... if only to clear any doubts about your involvement, Daddy.

Glenn: Thank you, Laura. (He glared at Zachary) It's nice to know that someone has faith in me. (Glenn walked away and went into his office)

Laura: You could've said some words of support, Zach.

Zachary: Not if I don't believe it, Laura.

Laura: Gloria, I suppose you're ready to believe the worst of him, too?

Gloria: No. I may have problems with Glenn but I don't believe he could've poisoned Nathan. He's not a violent man.

Laura: Hearing you say that makes me think you still care about him, Gloria.

Gloria: (hesitantly) I do. (Zachary was visibly uncomfortable) You don't stay married to someone for that long without having some lingering feelings left. But, it's not enough to save our marriage.

Laura: If it isn't, I'll accept that. But, I wish you'd give it another chance. You and Dad were happily married once. You could be again.

Gloria: I doubt it. (Pause as she glanced at her watch) Look, I've got a patient to be getting to.

Laura: Will we be seeing you tonight at the party at the Lassiter Estate? Simon and I were invited.

Gloria: You bet. Your brother here has actually got me looking forward to the party just so I can have a little fun to offset this terrible day.

Laura: Does anyone know what the occasion is?

Gloria: Doesn't seem to be one ... not yet anyway. But, Adam and Maggie always throw a great shindig. It should be a lot of fun. Don't forget you owe me a dance, Zachary.

Zachary: I haven't forgotten.

Laura: I just hope you're able to pry Dana away from him.

Gloria: (puzzled) Dana?

Laura: Yes. She's going with Zachary to the party.

Gloria: (slightly taken aback) Oh. I didn't know that. Well, don't let me get in the way of your fun, Zach. I'd hate to interfere in your love life.

Zachary: You wouldn't be. I think I can spare one dance.

Gloria: Let's play it by ear, shall we? See you later. (She walked away)

Zachary: (annoyed) That was uncalled for. You made her feel uncomfortable. Now she thinks talking to me is going to cramp my style.

Laura: I didn't mean it that way. But maybe you should give your romance with Dana a little more attention and your mooning over Gloria a little less. That's best for everyone, don't you think? (Laura walked away)

Zachary: (sighing) Maybe you're right, sis. Maybe that's exactly what I need to do.

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; the first floor. Sabrina and Lucas are there.

Lucas: I told you yesterday that my family's involvement in this case doesn't change a thing.

Sabrina: They weren't so directly implicated in this until now.

Lucas: You really believe all the bad press Greyhawks get, don't you? You not only think that they could be killers, but that I could knowingly cover it up?

Sabrina: Come on, Lucas, you wouldn't be the first person to lie to protect a family member.

Lucas: You're right, I wouldn't. And I never claimed to not have broken at least half of the Ten Commandments. But, I'm telling you what I told you before. My father taught his kids about owning up for what you've done ... and facing the consequences of your actions. He would never condone murder ... nor anyone who would be an accessory to it.

Sabrina: You sound almost sincere.

Lucas: And you sound like someone looking for a reason to fire me.

Sabrina: Conflict of interest isn't enough?

Lucas: You knew there would be some of that going in. But, I don't think you expected that your friends and relatives would be so upset about you having me on the payroll.

Sabrina: Well, I had no idea that the Greyhawks would revive the war with the Lassiters. No one's happy about this. Including Michael. I still can't believe he quit.

Lucas: And you blame me because he left?

Sabrina: Lucas, I asked you not to antagonize him, knowing the tension between the two of you. You didn't make it easy on him.

Lucas: The fact that I was breathing antagonized Michael, Sabrina.  He refused to give an inch in working with me. Besides, you know he never fully believed in Nate's innocence, which affected his ability to work on this case.

Sabrina: I admit Michael is a little inflexible. Comes from the influence of his father.

Lucas: If you want my opinion, there are plenty of good lawyers around, Sabrina. And maybe some of them aren't as rigid and unyielding as Michael Tamakai. Maybe you should think about that.

Sabrina: Lucas, don't tell me how to handle my employers.

Lucas: I just don't think Michael will come back. You know how loyal he is to the Lassiters, especially A.J. And even though I have nothing to do with it, he'll always believe I'm part of my father's schemes.

Sabrina: Maybe if you showed that you thought what your father was doing was wrong…

Lucas: But I don't. My father is doing what he has to and I support that. Besides, he has done has been illegal or dishonest.

Sabrina: There are a lot of people in this town who would debate that.

Lucas: You forget that most of the problems stem from A.J.'s secret marriage and Eric's harassing Danny James. My father didn't make any of that up.

Sabrina: He just made sure everybody knew about it.

Lucas: Again, what he did was neither illegal nor dishonest.

Sabrina: Maybe, but it's his ethics I have a problem with.

Lucas: Which, again, has nothing to do with my work on this case. Sabrina, you want to fire me so you can appease the Lassiters and your runaway employee, go ahead. But that's not in Nathan's best interest. I thought he was what was important here.

Sabrina: (sighing, nodding) You're right. He is. We have to clear Nathan ... not to mention trying to find out who wants him dead.

Lucas: Does this mean I'm not out of work?

Sabrina: For now. I guess I'll just have to pray my family and friends understand...and that I can get Michael back on the team. (Pause) Any thoughts about Nate's poisoning?

Lucas: You seem to think Glenn Dailey is a viable suspect. Given what I've learned about him, I do know he's not the most honest guy in the world.

Sabrina: Do you have evidence tying him to Candice's death?

Lucas: I'm not sure what the evidence means yet. That's going to take more investigation.

Sabrina: Well, I'd love to hear it, but I need you to follow a lead on Nate's poisoning.

Lucas: I'd think the police would be on that.

Sabrina: They are. They just aren't willing to follow all the leads.

Lucas: Really? What do you know that they don't?

Sabrina: About Jerry Nyland. I told you before that I think he could be involved in Nathan's attacks ... first at the courthouse, then at the hospital.. He was at both places when it happened.

Lucas: Well, like you asked, I checked the guy out. He's got a record so clean you can eat off of it. He's been with the force for twenty years, he's gotten several commendations for bravery and excellent job performance. There's nothing in his past to show he would be involved anything underhanded ... especially when it came to the job.

Sabrina: That's what Walter Stone said when I told him my suspicions. (Pause) I know there's no proof, but there's something about the man I don't like, Lucas.

Lucas: You want me to pay him a visit?

Sabrina: Yes. Talk to him ... shake him up. See what your read of the man is.

Lucas: I'll do that.

Sabrina: Now, please.

Lucas: You got it. (Pause) Just how far should I shake him up?

Sabrina: Until you get some answers.

Lucas: (grinning) Just the kind of questioning I like.

Scene: Covington Bay Medical Center; the cafeteria. A.J. and Melody are there.

Melody: I wish I could stay here and chat, but I do have patients to care for.

A.J.: I have to be dropping by the office anyway. I'm sure there's a problem the boss wants to blame me for.

Melody: How are things at the Journal?

A.J.: Not good. Circulation was down as it is, but with the Times now owned by the Greyhawks, this newspaper war is only bound to get worse. But, I'm sure Drake will find a way out. He's kept the paper going through some tough times. He won't let it come to end now.

Melody: Well, let me know what happens. (Pause) What time do you want to get together for the party?

A.J.: Let's play that by ear. I'll call you later, okay?

Melody: (slightly annoyed) I still can't believe you've known about this since yesterday and you never told me. I would've never come down to the police station to tell you about the invitation if I'd of known.

A.J.: I'm sorry. But, with all that's going on, I guess I forgot. You forget Victor Markham kidnapped me last night, not to mention all the trauma in the family.

Melody: (as they stood) I guess in that case, I can overlook it. Well, I better get back to the salt mines. (She kissed A.J.) I love you.

A.J.: I love you too. By the way, I picked up a new cell phone this morning since my last one was trashed in the fire. It's got the same phone number if you need to call me.

Melody: Sure. (They kissed again, then Melody pulled back) Oh, I almost forgot.

A.J.: What?

Melody: (she reached in her purse) When I was at your place, you got a delivery.

A.J.: (grinning) It wasn't ticking was it?

Melody: (frowning) That isn't funny. (She handed A.J. the small envelope) This is it.

A.J.: This? Was this all?

Melody: Yeah.

A.J.: (opening the envelope and pulling out a small gold trimmed card. It read: TONIGHT. AGAIN) Tonight? Again? What could that mean?

Melody: I don't know. Maybe it has something to do with the party.

A.J.: Maybe.

Melody: Well, I don't have time to decipher the mystery. (She kissed him on the cheek) Talk to you later.

A.J.: Bye. (Melody walked away as A.J. continued to curiously look at the card) What in the world does this mean? (At that moment, A.J.'s cell phone rang. He pulled it out of his jacket pocked and answered it) A.J. Lassiter.

Voice: I see you got the card.

A.J.: What!? (He started looking around the crowded cafeteria, but only saw tables of people eating, drinking or sitting around and chatting. No one was on a telephone) Where are you!? Who are you!?

Voice: I'm close by, and for now as close as you're going to get. (Pause) As for who I am ... if you're lucky, you might find that out soon enough.

A.J.:   You said you knew who killed Candice Dailey.   Do you… or is this just a silly game?

Voice: I do ... and I would've been glad to let you in on it. Who knew that so many obstacles would get in our way of meeting? (Pause) Glad you and your wife survived the fire.

A.J.:  We're you behind that? Did you have anything to do with those drug dealers?

Voice: That was an unexpected complication I can't take credit for. It really got in the way of all my plans.

A.J.: What plans?  Look, an innocent kid's life is at stake. Why don't you just stop playing games and tell me who killed Candice?

Voice: A.J., don't you realize the game is half the fun?

A.J.: Nathan James is facing death row. That's not something I like to gamble with.

Voice: (chuckling) Oh, so noble. You're going to make this more fun than I thought.

A.J.: Make what more fun?

Voice: Watching as you try and catch Candice's killer.

A.J.: I wouldn't have to if you'd tell me who it is.

Voice: That's where you wrong. Because even once you know who the killer is, you still have to catch him.

A.J.: And how would you know that?

Voice: Because ... I killed her. I killed Candice Dailey.
